Kuroshitsuji viewers out there?

Gratuitous anime art. Too pretty not to.

Anybody else watching the anime of Kuroshitsuji (Black Butler) right now? Cripes, talk about a change in tone! It's as if we were watching, I dunno, the Barbie Cinderella for three episodes, and then they dumped the goofy characters and the show turned into the Disney Cinderella with the right blend of humor and darkness and perverted subtext (this is exactly the right metaphor, right down to the violation in a pink dress), and now on episode 5 they've suddenly whipped Grimm's Aschenputtel in our faces, what with the slicing-off-of-heels and pecking-out-of-eyes. I'm not saying I don't like it, but, whoa.

Date: 2008-11-08 05:31 pm (UTC)I read the fairly unexpurgated versions of the Grimm's fairy tales when I was a little, little kid, and I will never forget that little song from Cinderella. Awful step-sisters cutting off bits of their feet to fit in the slipper because, after all, if you marry a Prince, you won't have to worry about walking again.
I have wide feet and can rarely find decent shoes, and I refuse to wear uncomfortable things that make me blister, bleed and go numb. That little line from the fairy tale has run through my head so many times when I try on shoes, lol. I currently have settled on Crocs Mary Janes as my everyday shoes. Not terribly attractive, but at least I can walk comfortably, considering I haven't found that Prince to marry who will ensure that I never need to walk again (barf!). The fairy tale would be a great lesson in feminism (don't change yourself to become something you are not) if Cinderella had only told the Footman she wasn't trying on some nasty, bloody slipper. *shrugs*
Where are you watching this Anime series? I'd like to get into Anime, especially Yaoi. Any good suggestions for a "History of/Best Of" kind of link?

Date: 2008-11-08 08:53 pm (UTC)I'm watching the series via downloads that can be had in anime-eden.com and aarinfantasy.com. It's gen rather than yaoi but the writers clearly adore playing with the subtext; serious deliberate teasing by the writers, I'm tellin' ya.
I haven't made a good comprehensive post on the anime I recommend--would like to remedy that!--but the ones I've enjoyed include:
Death Note (utter favorite) (gen but slashy)
Code Geass (gen but slashy)
Gankutsuou: The Count of Monte Cristo (gen but slashy)
Kuroshitsuji (pretends to be gen)
Junjou Romantica (yaoi)
Zombie-Loan (gen but slashy)
Antique Bakery (gay-friendly rather than true yaoi)
Loveless (yaoi)
Ai no Kusabi (yaoi)
Strawberry Panic (yuri)
Simoun (yuri)
Cowboy Bebop (still working my way through these; too amusingly plotty for me to slash)

Date: 2008-11-11 09:09 pm (UTC)Also, there's this anime called Monster, which is just brilliant, albeit not in a fannish way, and I would recommend it to anyone. It's like a long movie and one of the most realistic animes I've ever seen.
Of course, if you've seen them both, just ignore my babbling. :D

Date: 2008-11-09 09:06 am (UTC)I've taken on telling my RL friend named Sebastian about Kuroshituji after he gave me weird looks as I called him "demon butler". Luckily he sees the humour in it, even if he doesn't like anime/manga. *snickers*

Date: 2009-01-07 10:58 am (UTC)So glad you liked the story! Madame Red went all haughty on me in the prose on that one, and I let her, hee.
(I think the subs are up to...nine or ten now.)

Date: 2009-01-07 11:07 am (UTC)I'm telling you though. That scene in episode 4. The one where they eventually show you that all that *fuss* is just over wearing the corset - I'm telling you they did that purely, absolutely on PURPOSE.
Lots of fanservice in this one, that's for sure. The art too is gorgeous xD
