Those of you who told me to forget it and get on with the porn can rest easy: though a search shows that the account has been deleted and purged, the "Create Journal" function (which I thought I might use to reserve the name, just in case I did decide to switch) says that the username "amanuensis" is "already in use," so, that ends that discussion. Go figure. Back to the porn!

ETA: I'm being told, I believe, that I'm getting that message precisely because it's a deleted and purged account--I can't make a "hold 'em" free account with that name, I can only get it once I use a rename token. Does this sound right? Should I send the lj mods an email and ask?

ETA 2: That seems to be the case. Shoot, I still gotta make a decsion, then. Any of you who still want to vote in The Poll, please do!

You can't create a new account with a username that's been deleted & purged. If you want the username amanuensis, you can rename amanuensis1 to that with a rename token.

I think it can only be taken by a rename token. So you'd have to make a different LJ, buy a rename token for that and rename that one.

Oh yes, if you want to keep amanuensis1 and have amanuensis as well, you can create a new account with a random name, and rename that new account to amanuensis. Do these explanations make any sense whatsoever? :D

Yep, this is true. You can't create a new account with a deleted and purged username, but you can rename an existing account to that name. It's just one of those weird things.

I just had the thought that it might be LJ's way of getting paid for the trouble that deleting and purging perhaps is, forcing people to buy a rename token?

The info LJ gives at http://www.livejournal.com/rename/ says 'buy token, then grab name'. However, they also say, confusingly, However, if you are worried that someone might take the name before you have a chance to buy and use your token, you should create an account with the new username. Be sure to use the same e-mail address and password that you use for your current account for the new one.

I searched the list of recently freed-up names and amanuensis wasn't one. Even though if you search on it you get "This journal has been deleted and purged."

Looks like Somebody Up There doesn't love you well enough. Or maybe that name hasn't finished going through the freeing-up part of the process yet?

The list of freed names randomly generates 300 names on a page for any given letter, so unless you're reloading and reloading them, you won't see it. :)
