Okay, I really hope Spartacus: Blood and Sand keeps an audience. It could not be more chock-full of gratuitious blood and nudity and vulgarity. The characters are more than just archetypes, and the women kick some serious ass, YES. I like it much better than I ever liked HBO's Rome. KEEP IT UP, STARZ.

It's streaming on Netflix if you've got that.

My older brother gave me the Rome series on DVD. Worth a look or waste of time?

A lot of people thought it was the kewlest thing ever; I watched the first season hoping for something more. I can't remember if I actually finished the first season, but it felt a bit dull to me.

NPR's Wait Wait Don't Tell Me described it as "like the movie 300 but not so restrained and subtle." I was sold.

It's the blood spray and the nudity that actually is pulling me in. That and watching the female characters create just as much of the gore as the guys.

I watched the first episode, and although I quite liked the lead characters, I became amazingly bored and then annoyed with the overly-stylised gore / violence. Once or twice, as a highlight, I could have handled, but it was like a whole other character in the show - to me, anyway.

Did that aspect settle down at all? I could see definite potential, but not enough to go back for episode two.

There were definite shades of the old 70s Caligula - not that that's an altogether bad thing. ;)

:D

Heh, I didn't like the slow-mo effects at first, because they reminded me of the action sequences I hated in Gladiator, BUT, when the slow-mo effects became more and more of a showcase for the increasingly gory blood spray, for some reason I started to like it. "Oh! I see! This isn't stylized action, it's deliberate use of color."

It has gratuitous violence, gore, nudity and sex, so it had better keep an audience!

Besides, any self-respecting Lucy Lawless fan who is now old enough has to watch this. XD

How old are we when Lucy Lawless is playing a Roman MATRON? Migod.

*LOL* I don't know about you, but I'm 28 and 7 months old and I'm feeling quite young. (Also, the red hair? It makes me both happy and horrified at the same time.)

It isn't like she's not still hot as hell! We just saw her strutting her gorgeousness all over Battlestar Galactica.

The red hair's hideous, but in a sort of "it's supposed to be" way.

Oh, she's hot all right! I'd still do her! (And after 6 seasons of being forbidden anything but black, I can see why she'd want different colours.)

The red hair's hideous, but in a sort of "it's supposed to be" way.

It's totally supposed to be! And hey, remember Atia's wig collection? She had some pretty outrageous colours and curls and shapes in there! <3

Guh I've wanted to watch it ever since I watched the trailer on a gay news site, and now you verified... I MUST WATCH IT BUT HOW.

I don't care that it looks like a degraded combination of Gladiator and 300 and Caligula, because I love those all. lol

I found Gladiator dull, but I enjoyed 300 a great deal. And I've never seen Caligula because I've been told I'll be disappointed at how unsexy it really is. Don't know if that's true or not!

LOL, come to think of it, yes it was.

Caligula is, mmm, might have been scandalous (or so I heard) in 1979, but not anymore, like Emmanuelle.
Hah, I have a bad taste in films!

Sorry my cynical--or jealous :P-- part of me misused the word "degraded", but I know I will simply like the show.
But when will I get to watch it? *bites nails*

Anyone can "like" - isn't the test whether you ARE Spartacus? Like "I AM Obamicus" after the Democratic convention, or "I AM Scott Brownicus" after the election Tuesday? Does this show fill you with revolutionary zeal to join Team STARZ?

Date: 2010-01-24 03:02 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] amanuensis1.livejournal.com
No, no, the emphasis is on, "*I* am Spartacus!" Like the way I have it in my (deliberate) title. ^_^

OK - It's "like," not zeal. Endorsement received and logged in my database. Thanks!

Heh! It's funny to have two totally opposite opinions on the same page of my friends list. GRRM (guy who wrote the Song of Ice and Fire series) disagrees with you! I'm not sure if I get STARZ or not, I should check into that! :D

It's a great illustration of consistency in taste! I didn't like Rome, but he did, so my liking this and him hating it certainly reflects the different kinds of audience to whom it'll appeal.

Good point! I loved Rome to pieces, so maybe I shouldn't be too quick to look for this one. (I'll probably hunt it down anyway, I could be the exception who likes both!)

I totally want to see this, but I am loath to get rid of HBO for Starz. Will you be watching ASoIaF when that airs?
