Sooo...I popped in my Netflixed DVD of Avatar: The Last Airbender and let out a yowl of anger when I found there was no option for the original Japanese audio. I went to the web to find an English subbed version with the original language audio.

...Guys, I swear I did not know. I had assumed it was anime!

Haha, I couldn't believe an American cartoon imitating an anime-style could be good either. And then I sat down and watched the entire first season in one night. This was part-way through the second season, so then I had to go through the torture of waiting forever for Nickelodeon to finish the series. Glad you don't have to go through that!

Here's a fellow victim of the same assumption :) I assumed that this thing Avatar that kept coming up on my flist was anime, went to AnimeEncyclopaedia (spelling?) and didn't find any entries there. I thought, WTF? My flist know is and this thing doesn't? It didn't even occur to me that it's not anime. :)

Welcome to the awesome that is Avatar! My niece and nephew got me into it midway through the first season. Keep an ear out for Fire Nation General/Admiral Zao - you know his voice actor very well! :-D (Mark Hamill is Fire Lord Ozai. And Rene Auberjenois (sp?) does two characters, too.)

I did the same thing with the Vampire Hunter D remake. Dominus and I friggin exhausted ourselves searching for the Japanese language option. It was only days later that someone informed us it had never even been recorded in Japanese.

*g* I was certain it was Japanese too before I actually watched it. I have a hard time getting into most anime and manga - I think because my brain is so hard-wired to western storytelling styles - but Avatar and its combination of western and eastern tropes provided a nice bridge to get me to try some new things.

(Also, Iroh is one of my very favourite characters ever).

LOL! I never think it was anime though. I watched in first here subbed in Spanish in a local channel and dunno, while it was anime-like, I knew it couldn't really be anime. It was the colors and facial expressions I think... It looked American XD
