Night-blooming Heartsease by
julad--Novella length Snape/Neville which takes place as a prequel to
resonant8's Transfigurations--and if you've read Transfigurations, you may recall some information about those characters, in that ficverse. Julad's story contains a quote from Transfigurations at the beginning, so that there should be no mistaking it.
Snape/Neville may be no rarepair, but it's not a pairing I read often, not without significant recommendation and a quick hook into the story--and oh, how quickly I was hooked. Neville is so Neville in this story, so fumbling and immature and it's such a unique narrator voice that I couldn't help reading on and on, so very terrified for the boy was I. Snape is divinely Snape. And the story is so rich, being a war story and a story of magical invention, rich in detail and plot and never sacrificing either in the name of trying to be a tale of romance as well. The author's wish to get things just right in this story is so perfectly carried/mirrored in Neville's narrative voice. My heart is aching and will be for days.
