This is the "Hey, it's OK...." page (a regular feature of a "yes, we all do these things, don't feel guilty" list) from the July 2007 issue of Glamour, which is about as mainstream-girly a magazine can get:

Click the image to get the larger version, below the cut, and then read the fourth one down.

Is it all right that I feel not only amused, but snootily smug about this? Because lookit that--mainstream audiences are worse than fandom at distinguishing fantasy and reality. Whereas the circle that I hang with, rational creatures that we are, wouldn't baldly substitute the name Harry Potter for Dan Radcliffe. I stand by all our usual fanfiction smutwriting refrains--fantasy is not real life and we're very good about distinguishing that.

He might turn 18 on July 21 though, IF HE LIVES THAT LONG MUA HA HA.

Do they mean work total, or work tote bag?

Tote bag. And, yeah, if he lives that long and if the book covers that long a time! (They traditionally end before that next birthday of his--maybe this one will be the exception.)

Most of the world needs slapping across the face with a dead haddock. Unfortunately, instead of a reality check, a large number of them would go 'oooh, was that Nemo?'

If you want a bigger laugh, there is a 'sealed' section in this month's Australian Cosmopolitan magazine, about the 'inside story on men and sex' - and it features a nicely cock-blurred pic of - yes, you guess it, Dan Radcliffe... What cracked me up is the pic they've used is the fan manip that appeared just after the release of the Equus promo pics - the one where the legs don't really match the body, but the blend was really well done. I had a WTF moment, before giving up completely.

:D

Snootily smug, yes, a million times. Though confusing fictional characters with actors, even if they're characters from movies/TV shows, pushes my irritation button as well. ;-)

I mean, even if "the actor who plays Harry Potter" doesn't ring as nicely, Harry Potter as a character does turn 17 in the books this year (in book 7, that is), so, hey, there's room for confusion there! But we could set them all straight. ^_^

Also - I love you. This is truly awesome. Take THAT, mainstream audience!!

Also - I love the rest of this list, too, hee! Except that last one. That should read "...to admit you don't know something. It shows you still like to learn new things."

It's been a long day. I stared at the damn article like an idiot thinking, "What the hell? Harry turns 17 on the 31st! This doesn't make any.... oh."

*headdesk*

Damnit! If anybody reading that article was far enough in fandom (it wouldn't have to be much, mind) to wonder if Dan is still jailbait, then they probably know his real name!

You've humiliated me for the last time Glamour!

Giant lol :).

I'll raise my hand for the 27yo Harry Potter, please - I'd much rather he was only a fraction younger than me :).

Smug - Radcliffe hasn't been jailbait for nearly 2 years :-P.

Less smug - just found out that censorship/etc laws in my country do *not* distinguish between fictional and real... and that while the age of consent is 16, smut should not be written/read about anyone under 18.

I suspect there's leeway, since novels where teenage protagonists get laid abound, but PWPs, not so much. Le sigh. Because one of my favourite things is a school-age Harry at the tender mercy of Lucius, or falling madly, dysfunctionally and hopefully kinkily for Snape :(.

S'okay, really. I have come to terms with my perversity, and it shouldn't be an issue in this journal. It was just a surprise at the time :).

Distinguishing fantasy from reality - somewhere along those lines, I'm far more comfortable with the most depraved non-con squick-filled Potterverse fic than the most romantic tender Real People Slash...

You know...if people are still confusing Daniel and are at the same time wondering if he is legal while thinking of Harry, they not only need a reality check, but they need to watch an interview with Daniel...I mean c'mon he is a ultimate ladies man and charming as hell...Harry is a bit confused about the female population and tends to talk about the weather...lol...so, not only one is real and one is not, but even personality char. are diff, so WTF?...*yells to the idiots out there* GET OUT OF THE CLOUDS FOR A SEC, WOULD YOU?...(a bit ironic for a crazy fangirl to be yelling that to the rest of the non fandom comunity...lol)
