Anybody here read Tamora Pierce?

The Circle of Magic books? The latest one, The Will of the Empress?

She's got one of the Circle in a same-sex romance.

:squeeble!:

Yup. I'm a big fan of hers.

YA lit is often impressively progressive.
Kel and Alanna both had premarital sex, and one of the Kel books mentioned homosexuality as a taboo (though Kel didn't understand why).

Yup. I was reading the Trickster books and was startled (pleasantly) all over again by the premarital sex.

When I was a kid, one of my friends was best internet buddies with Tammy Pierce, and beta-read her books. She got her to come to our school and talk to the class about writing.

I did read her books, though they weren't entirely my cuppa. She is totally cool as a person, though, especially when you're 12 and it's way cool to have grown-ups befriend you at all. :)

I was less enthralled with her Alanna books, though I thought they were decent, but her more recent series have really won me. She's starting to feel a little bit like Diana Wynne Jones to me--they're complex, fun, and when they're over, one week later, I can't quite remember what the plot was supposed to be. ^_^

Tamora Pierce is a regular attendee at Boskone. And everywhere she goes, she's got this gaggle of tweens following her around like baby ducks. It's the cutest thing (and so nice to see the author encouragement in that manner).

She does get better with almost every book, I think! I think the Trickster Books, and Cold Fire (in the CoM series) are her best.

Omg, yes. XD Tamora Pierce is one of my favorite authors.. ever. I sort of sped through Empress in a near-constant 'eee, yay!'

I'm firmly convinced Tamora Pierce is the non-fandom, lots of people read her, but.. no one talks about it.

And, yeah, however much I love it still, the first quartet is still the weakest. The fact that it was re-written from an adult novel probably says something about this.

... *cough* *can't help flailing about for a little bit*

I need to find out more about this "re-writing from an adult novel"--interesting!

I'm two-thirds of the way through Empress. Before fandom, I used to read books in one sitting. :P No such doing now--I'm on the computer too much! Isn't it pathetic?

I find I really like her when she's dealing with the more adult issues, as she's doing with this book. Now that the Circle are eighteen-year-olds.

(Cold Fire was my favorite! That's the first of her books whose plot didn't escape me a week after I read it. SO powerful.)

New Circle of Magic book(s)?? How did I miss this?!

I'm am a huge Pierce fan dating back to 4th grade, when I stumbled across Lioness Rampant in the school library. (I have this weird thing about finding series by the final book... did it with Susan Cooper's Dark is Rising and Rosemary Sutcliff's Arthur/Eagles sets, too.) I adore the Alanna books, actually, and kinda wish we saw more of Alanna in the Wild Magic and Protector of the Small books -- though I loved that we got so much Raoul in the latter! I haven't read the Tricksters yet, though. Life slammed me upside the head just as they came out.

*hurries off to find the new books*

*hearts her*

I didn't really believe the hints at first because a) she's a mainstream YA lit author, and b) slash! But then Daja went all starry-eyed and I had very little jaw left.

I have the Tricksters series, and am waiting for the paperback for Empress to come out. (But Empress was out a long time ago, no?)

I saw her at The Witching Hour; she's a really interesting and gifted public speaker. Every so often I have a Pierce-fit and end up re-reading all of them one after the other.

The Alanna series is still my favorite, but it's the one that I read as an 11-yr-old outsider-type and it stuck with me. I love the Circle Books, and thought Empress was fabulous (esp. Daja's romance plot line.)

I wasn't too keen on the Trickster books the first time I read them: Aly's the one who really strikes me as Sue-ish, with her Magic Sight and incessant good luck and interfering God. But they were much better second time through. I'm listening to the audio version with Trini Alvarado right now and it's great. =)

Actually, I have a question for you: why do you like the later books better than Alanna? It's been a while since I've read the others, true, but I felt like most of the sequels other than the Immortals were sort of...copies. (Granted, Lloyd Alexander does the same thing down to the characters, but...well. :D) Did I not read far enough ahead? Are there other things that make you like the Alanna books less than the others?

Unf.
Randomly in one of my H/D bursts, hence why I'm at your journal.
But.. I'm so happy that you read TP.

I first read the SotL when I was around.. 9? Whoa, 7 years, please. D: Ever since that, I've loved everything else and devoured the rest of her books. XD

At the beginning, Alanna's quartet was my favourite, and the Circle wasn't too great in my opinion. But since I'm older now, I still like Alanna's quartet, but I must admit that I've got such a soft spot for the Circle. They're more.. Real and amazing than the other series/realm, and I really want to be an ambient mage. *dies*. XD

But, seriously. I admire her works and rereading 'The Will of the Empress' right now. :D. I'm so SAD that this is her last book in that world (Quote from the back: "This sweeping saga is the final in the Circle series", but I hope it's wrong. D:), minus some side stories later on.

*rambles* And I've got to admit.. Aly's probably my least favourite. XD Because she seems so Mary Sueish.
