For all the Firefly people...

I can't tell you how happy I was when, in the teaser, Kaylee got to her feet and walked. What with her "can't feel anything" line and the crew carrying her to the site where she was needed at the end of the pilot, I was afraid she was going to live but be paraplegic from then on. And why should this disturb me so? Well, okay, yes, because she's lovable and I wouldn't wish that on her. But more, it would annoy me to have that fall on the sweet perky "nothing gets me down!" forgiving character--as if she's the one best suited to cope with such a blow. Gimme a break. Cliché-and-a-half.

:) I watched these on air, in the order Fox showed them -- which is to say, COMPLETELY out of order -- so "The Train Job" was the first thing I saw. It sort of blows that whole story arc in the pilot when you know Kaylee's going to be fine....

Yeah, me too. OTOH, it made the presence and backstory of River and Simon and COMPLETE AND UTTER MYSTERY. Which meant it was really quite exciting (to me) when they finally went back and 'splained it...

And yes, I give Kaylee one of Wash's lines in this icon. Sue me.

"What's with that image in the credits? WHY IS SHE NAKED IN A BOX?!" ;)

Ah, unintended suspense....

I have decided it's cool to have these Firefly posts because I get to see lots of new icons I've never seen. ^_^

These Firefly icons are actually some of my oldest- the first I ever made (besides just cropping a few ratties...)

I still can't get over the nixing of "Serenity" as the pilot. Such a "WTF?" I haven't had since--well, since about 5pm today, because I have them a lot, but you know what I mean. ^_^

Fox: completely braindead.

It's the only answer, honestly.

Well, you know, show them out of order, on Friday nights when your main target demographic is out of the house, and make sure to show them during baseball season so the actual starting time isn't the one in the schedule, plus is completely unpredictable and dependant upon the end of a baseball game that (again) your target demographic generally couldn't care less about...

Yep. Fox definitely wanted this show to succeed. Yep.

I don't know whether you'd been pointed at this site or not, but I'm doing it now, just in case.

DON'T GO YET! Wait till you get a bit farther into the series, and start to have some questions about River, but watch these sessions BEFORE you go to see Serenity. You won't understand them at this juncture, but they'll add so much depth to the movie, you will definitely want to see them. In order of release, not numerical order, by the way.

These sessions were released without advertisment on the internet as a sort of viral easter egg for rabid fans to hunt down and squee over. And they have been squeeful indeed. Can't wait to hear what you think!

You're welcome! I've been following them with grim, squirming delight since 641 hit the net, but I think the arc is finished now, so I don't expect they'll disappear anytime soon. Certainly not before Serenity opens.

Huh? What's 641? I was a huge Firefly fan from the first airing (only TV dvds I own, and I got them the day they came out), but I don't follow the fandom...

Huh? What's 641?

Gah. 641 is apparently my dislexia exerting itself again. I meant 461, as in the number of the first of these sessions released on the internet. It showed up on my flist as an "WTFOMGRIVERBLINGBLING" about a month ago, and I clicked through. Honestly though, beyond these, I've been quite the latecomer to the series myself. If it hadn't been for [livejournal.com profile] cawti forcing me to beta Firefly fic for her, I might never even have watched to begin with.

That's one of the wonderful things about Firefly - in my mind, they stay away from a lot of the cliches that they could have had creep in, and do a lot of fun and interesting stuff, instead. :D Can'twaitforSerenity.

The ending of this episode was so incredibly "not a cliche" boss. What Mal did with the flunky. Hee.

I always hated it when they made the good guy let the bad guy go after the bad guy has promised to return and kill everbody.

"If you release me I will return and destroy everything you hold dear!"

"Okay Mr. Man, I love you, bye-bye!"

It's just stupid.
I think Whedon approaches cliches in the show and then does something else instead just to be like, "Now see how stupid it would have been for the show to have had the cliche instead of that?"

*grins* See, that was the ending to which I was referring, the one that SOLD me on the show. The rest of the ep had been kinda, well, it's okay, kinda fun, probably will watch it...WHAT? DID HE JUST KICK THE GUY INTO THE ENGINE??? OMG I must watch this show now!

That right there defined Mal's character for me. And cemented him as pure, unadulterated Slytherin once you scrape beneath that Big Damn Hero exterior. I've adored him ever since.

Hee, you're referrin' to my above comment, aren't you? That was a splendid moment. Though I could argue for a time with you about how he's more Big Damn Hero Who's Not Stupid than Slytherin. But why? We'd both agree that the other has a point so I might as well leave it there. ^_^

Several months ago I tried my hand at sorting the Firefly crew... You may not want to read until you've seen more eps, but I actually put Mal & Zoe into Hufflepuff, because their most enduring quality seems to be loyalty: to each other, to the ship, to their lost cause.

BTW, I'm enjoying reading about you watching the show and re-seeing it thru your eyes.

Hee, it's fun. If I have more to say I'll keep posting! And I think I'll wait a fewwww more eps before I read your sorting, just in case!

Yeah, this is why I love Firefly. I like all the characters because even though they have certain archetypal characteristics, they don't become cliches. Whedon rocks like that.

Yes, he does. Though I watched the first season of Buffy it never sucked me in like this has in only two episodes. Heck, just in the pilot. (Though Once More With Feeling is one of the best musicals in American Musical history, I maintain.)

I love Kaylee and not the least becuase she's more than the perky one! I also love for her for being so frankly sexual - she's not pure and pollyannaish, but cheerful and full of life. *grins*

And now go watch more Firefly! *shoos you away*

Exactly. If she were just the perky one, she'd be the annoying one. Instead she's adorable. Lovable.

I first saw the actress in Space Cases when she was about 10. She's all grown up now.
[Also somewhat hard to believe, but Jewel Staite is actually a little younger than Summer Glau.]

Firefly rules. I can't wait for the movie to come out on Friday. Me and my friends are making shirts with quotes from the movie and wearing them because we are dorks. Mine'll say "Shiny" on the front in small letters and on the back "Curse your sudden, but inevitable betrayal." Yup, dorks, the lot of us.
