Honestly, it was a two-joke skit:
(1) Hermione (played by Lindsay Lohan) has gotten cleavage over the summer, which distracts all the males who see her,
(2) Look at how well the SNL cast can dress up as Hogwarts characters.
And that was really it. Once you got the basic premise of #1, it wasn't all that funny. I've seen the concept done better in fanfic. [Who wrote "Hooters" about Ginny?]

Ah, but there was a "Dancing Bear" element about it. Not the cleverness of the jokes, perhaps, but the delight of seeing them get so much of the canonical elements correct. And seeing the SNL cast as Hogwarts characters and do them so well is a good deal of the appeal of this kind of humor.
