Halloween, JR:PLR, hell yeah DW deserves my support

Happy Halloween, everybody! I saw some folks in the Northeast U.S. checked in today to say they were okay, and I'm glad. Though it still sounds like there's a lot of power outages and cleanup to be had among you. I hope it goes quickly. *hugs*

In JR: PLR news, Jeremy Renner will be hosting Saturday Night Live on November 17. As one tumblr user has put it, "I'M NOT CRYING IT'S JUST VIOLENTLY RAINING ON MY FACE. LEAVE ME HERE TO DIE."



Without trying to make drama over it, I look at the further changes that appear to be coming to Livejournal and have decided it's time for me to a) give some money to Dreamwidth, b) import my LJ to DW, c) gussy up my DW, and d) start crossposting. I'll stay around LJ as long as it's tolerable, but, yeah. It's time for these measures.

Dear, I haven't been online much the last couple of months (well, not as much as I used to be) and I have heard that there were changes coming to LJ but I am not sure what they are. Can you link me to a quick summary? Because I have no idea what you're referring to, alas.

Yes, gladly! This post (http://lj-releases.livejournal.com/79480.html) has explanations and also has the utter vitriol of the response comments in it. There's also a follow up post here (http://lj-releases.livejournal.com/79629.html) that tries to clarify some other rumors. I'm not going to summarize because I've been looking through those comments for a couple of days and agreeing with much of it and, oof, it's really exhausting. I'm trying not to mire myself in it any longer and instead just getting on with the Dreamwidth backup biz.

The changes at LJ are annoying. I like tumblr, but it is for tumblr. LJ and tumblr are very different entities, and I am at LJ for what it is and tumblr for a totally different experience (and AO3 for something else again).

Sometimes my beef has been, "Ugh, I don't like these changes," sometimes it's, "Every change you're making breaks something and I have to wait until the next release for it to be fixed," and now it's getting to be, "Where is this all going to end?" And if it ends up something I don't want to adjust to, well. Good to have another place to go if it does come to that.

I do not plan to leave LJ unless it becomes truly untenable--I'll crosspost for sure! But I may find it more pleasant to use the familiar feel of DW if I don't like the new format of LJ. We'll see!

Luckily they've backed off on everything. Everything is optional. People translating from the Russian post made a mistake. Blah blah blah. I'm growing tired of it too, but I've been here 10+ years and have a permanent account. I suppose I'll be here until LJ shuts down (though it is getting quieter and quieter on my friends list, which is sad).

Mmmmmmyeah, but everything's not going to be optional--the friendspage change will be mandatory and uniform. I dunno, I might like it, but if I don't, or it's too buggy, I want to have other options just in case.

The (what do they call it? everscrolling?) tumblr-like thing for the friends list will be optional. I only skimmed from that point on, but I thought if you wanted it to be as it is now, you'd only have to opt out (or maybe opt in to the new style)?

But either way, keeping your options open is always good.

Safety net it is--I really, really don't plan on abandoning LJ unless it becomes impossible to cope. There are too many things here that keep me! But crossposting in a familiar template feels comforting right now, in this era of changes.

I really don't want to leave. I still have lots of things I read on LJ and groups and well I'm a creature of habit. Plus I want to support the online Russian platform because people need it.

But the changes are making it harder and harder. I need to back up my LJ for certain on DW.... And at least start crossposting.
But really, I'm most active on tumblr these days anywya. It's just the best of three for posting art.
