"Why I Write (What I Write)" has been circulating again as a meta theme. And I want to share my thoughts, but I think my answers are not so rich as some of yours. So, my self-challenge was to write Why I Write Everything I Write in a short a space as possible, so it doesn't even need the cut-tag.

Here y'go.

Why I Write:

Harry Potter Fanfiction:
Been to ff.net recently? Star Wars, 8000 stories. Yu-Gi-Oh, 16,000. Lord of the Rings, 22,000. Harry Potter, 90,000. Because we freaking love to write Hogwarts like no other universe. Can't put it into any other words.

Smut:
Because sexual arousal is wonderful. Erotica that produces sexual arousal is wonderful. Because no storyline grips me like the ones that let me write smut. Becaue porn should be celebrated, not hidden in shame-- particularly porn for women.

Harry Potter Smut:
Because the Potterverse is a dark one with all the opportunity for non-con. Because Harry Potter began as a book series in my head, and I can write book characters into smutty situations with much greater ease than I can films or other visual media; I feel less "bound" to the actors' portrayals. Because I found the series as an adult, not a child, and have no "do not sully these innocent memories!" squicks about it. Because sticking to smut in this fandom means I gather the readers who like that sort of thing, and know what they're getting when they start to read my stuff, and we're all happy.

Slash:
Because same-sex relations have a sense of equality about them. Because I am badly screwed in the head to think that male-female relationships featuring consensual sex mean that the female is a slut. Because it's defiant and unconventional and therefore has the allure of the different. Because the idea that love conquers gender is too sweet for words. Because it takes me one step away from Mary Sue-dom.

Harry/Lucius:
Because Jason Isaacs's performance as Lucius Malfoy took my fricking breath away. Because I always identify with the hero in stories. Because the erotica I wrote before writing Pottersmut was exclusively non-con, and I still prefer that.

Non-con:
Because rape absolves the victim from all "slut!" accusations. Because villains are geared to make your knees buckle in that "dangerous is sexy" way.The rest is all a mire of "because I'm wired that way" that cannot be explained.

MPREG:
Because pregnancy is a natural outcome of het sex and romance, with striking emotional moments and decisions, and I miss those opportunities in slash stories. Because pregnancy as a result of rape is the ultimate bodyfuck.

No WIP's:
Because I write smut, and you should always get your smutty payoff in every posting/story/chapter. Because it makes me finish what I start. Because I like to read completed works at one go, and am a prim little Golden Rule-er.

Harry Potter, 90,000

And that's without all NC-17 fanfiction, or at least most of it.

Harry/Lucius:
Because Jason Isaacs's performance as Lucius Malfoy took my fricking breath away.

Not to mention the fact Dan and Jason had wonderful chemistry in CoS. I don't think they were aware of it, but they unconsciously gave Harry and Lucius's relationship a very sexy subtext. Jason is 1 minute onscreen and they already have such an intense moment, it makes you hot and bothered. I don't think I've seen such good chemistry between Harry and the other characters in both movies, and that includes Snape.

Oh my god, don't get me started on Snape. ;D

I'm not sure if I missed the chemistry between them because I was so overwhelmed by JI's presence it blotted out all else, or because I saw it and immediately went into denial. "Oh, for god's sake, Harry's TWELVE!" (Yeah, your point being? ^_^) Though I do remember not knowing which way to look, between Lucius, Snape, Lockhart, Harry, and Ron too-- everybody was pretty damn dishy! (Funny how Movie!Draco doesn't move me at all.)

Baaad evil chanslasher! Bad! No underrage!Harry/Lucius for you! >:D

Lucius, Snape, Lockhart, Ron = me ogling the screen incessantly. Specialy Snape and Lucius. Alaaaaaaannnnnn...

You aren't moved by movie!Draco? Not even the "didn't know you could read" line?
I think it's because Tom Felton does him like some Brit little punk with too little snottiness and haughtiness for a Malfoy, and besides, he's not very sophisticated.
AND he doesn't show special inclination to rape Harry at the age of twelve. ;)

I think that the problem with Movie!Draco is that he is, as you say, inelegant. I don't think Tom Felton is doing a bad job with it-- though there's something in his accent that seems off to me. Like he's concealing a lower-class accent under it all. But canon!Draco is supposed to be an inelegant little shit, and Tom Felton is not unhandsome, but he's young, and when you're young, you gotta be playing CUTE to appeal to me in general. Not playing a nasty bully.

I for one will be thrilled to see him lose the hair gel next flick. That one picture of him with Emma's wand at his throat is darned adorable!

Hmm....but canon!Draco is a nasty bully, not a cute little Slytherin. That is supposed to be his charm, the fact that we like his snottiness and bulliness because he's such a deranged little twerp.

That one picture of him with Emma's wand at his throat is darned adorable!

"Darned adorable" was not exactly the term I used when I saw that pic. That is, when I recovered from being out cold from seeing him without gel.

The seer in me (yeah right) says we are going to be very hot and bothered while seeing PoA...(even without Lucius, which is a shame...)

He certainly is playing it precisely right! Unfortunately I don't LIKE Draco; I like that Tom's playing the character so well, but I don't like Draco. So, no drooling from me. Not so far, anyway.

Yeah, he's quite an accomplished little actor for his young age, at least that's what I gathered from Jason Isaac's interview in the special features of the CoS DVD. :)

Give him some time, he'll be bish, I'm sure. :D

Why I Love Amanuensis:

Because while the rest of us are dithering and blathering about theory, she talks about writing.

Because while I like to use longish words to make my kinks sound smart, she uses the kind of words that make her smart sound kinky.

Because she loves writing erotica for women, and celebrates that.

Because she says more in fewer sentences than I could with a gun to my head.

Because her unabashed explanation of m-preg makes me re-consider.

Because she is perfectly easy with acknowledging her own screwiness, and how that fuels some of the most fabulous fiction writing on the net.

Because she writes really hot sex.

Because she wrote all this at 6:47 in the morning.

Because she could probably write really hot sex at 6:47 in the morning, before her first cup of coffee.

What she said.
Go Fab! Go Amy!

It is deliciously subversive (blah blah blah dominant paradigm blah blah blah) to find women unapologetically writing erotica that appeals to their own (our own) real turn-ons and kinks and prejudices, however strange they may appear to the received view of the world and what women "ought to" like or what men, or women who haven't thought about it much, think women like, or should like.

Not to mention it's hot as hell. Ahem.

paradigm

My favorite buzzword for "look out, here comes the pretentiousness!" Hee!

And I don't get erotica writers who write what they think people want, and not what turns THEM on. Well, I mean, I DO, if they're trying to be published and sell stuff. But I still think you're better off writing what "passes the wet test" and letting the audience find you. Trying to write AT an audience is so much at risk for falling flat.

I wandered in here from [livejournal.com profile] ausmac.

And I don't get erotica writers who write what they think people want, and not what turns THEM on.

For me it comes down to my inner censor telling me I really shouldn't be writing that threesome smut or some other thing even though it really turns me. In some smut fic, I'm in a constant battle with my inner censor while writing although lately I have been getting better at writing what turns me on.

Discovering the internet and fan fiction a few years ago really opened me up to the endless possibilities of erotic and slash fiction, such as threesomes, voyeurism, and so on. I got my smut fix from Harlequin romances and a couple of erotic novels written for women which are vanilla compared to some of the stories I have discovered.

A good deal of the erotic novels for women are quite gently vanilla, aren't they? I won't say that makes me upset, because I'm happy that there's at least acknowledgement that women like erotica. But yes, you wonder if the people writing that stuff are really women, and would honestly answer, "*I* was aroused by this." Me, I'll take Nexus's line of erotica over Black Lace any day.

May I amend this slightly to read that [livejournal.com profile] amanuensis1 writes really, really, really hot sex, of the sort that leaves you feeling as if you need a shower and some kind of electrolyte beverage to replenish yourself.

And may I also say thank you to [livejournal.com profile] amanuensis1 for such a lovely post, celebrating the joys of sexual arousal and all things smutty. It can be a very trying thing to be an American female, love sex and sexuality, and wish to express it without drawing nasty stinkeye.

Would be all modest here except I must grab your hands and jump around with you, "celebrating the joys of sexual arousal and all things smutty." Women's Porn Parade, now!

Turboblush?

Hmm. (cocks head thoughtfully at Amanuensis, wondering if turboblush is the same as full body blush, how that might be verified, and what part of the Women's Porn Parade that would fall under.) You turboblushing, Terminator-ass kicking babe.

I don’t think you have written something/anything that I haven’t liked – okay loved. I avidly look forward to each and every new work you post.

Nope… not stalker… just a fan.

You write steamy stories/fiction, sex and well - other stuff, he he - and they are much loved and appreciated

Don’t stop… Please don’t stop… Oh Yes… More Please

Oops got confused there… thought I was caught up in a story. Heh.

Appreciate the essay… it helps understand things (your writing) better.

Will crawl away now before I further embarrass myself.

*giggling* You're adorable! Thank you for coming by and commenting (especially with the yummy icon! That'll keep the home fires burning, so to speak)-- I'm thrilled you like my stuff and I do hope to keep on with it! Even if I have to poke the plotbunnies with a stick to get them to be lively. Thank you so very much!
