Finished watching the anime episodes of Death Note.



Wept copiously. I frightened co-workers today, bawling in the bathroom. So many reasons for weeping--I wept for Light, for L, for the delightfully ugly crash-and-burn of a fool's dream of justice, for Mello, for Ryuk, but also for reaching the end of something I adored. Fuck me.

I still have the live-actions to watch! And the manga to read, and I want to find forums that can explain some of the convolutions of the four different Death Notes (especially why the police at times could and then couldn't see the Shinigami--who touched what Note again? I got lost), and I bought the U.S. DVDs in current release (and my Light and L figures, still boxed, are sitting on my shelf making eyes at each other) and can give the English dubbed versions a go for variety. And an icon or two to make.

I think there is at least one Light/L fanfic in me that wants to get out--not so much for the smut, especially as my smut needs are being channelled into my original fiction right now--but it's the meta in me wanting to manifest in fic. The part that explains why Light came to his end because of his love for L. As if there were any doubt. *crunches apple*

I actually really loved Ryuk. Didn't you? And though I'm all about Light/L, I actually liked Misa too. Yes, do watch the live-actions, I thought they were decent!

I'm so looking forward to the live-actions! It'll be like seeing my favorite book turned into a film, after a fashion. ^_^

I loved Ryuk! During the episodes when we see less of Ryuk I was aching to have him back.

I find Misa hateful in the way we're supposed to hate Misa--the way she f**ks things up for Light so badly! She's a great character, no question. Pretty sure I didn't weep for her at all, though. ^_^

Meh, I didn't like Misa . . . but I could like her. And have, in a few fanfics where she was actually vaguely intelligent. *shrug* She's all right. And especially so in moonythestral's Death Note Bloopers thingie. Do let us know how you like the live actions — I haven't seen them yet, and am not sure if I want to or not.

-I can't really find it in myself to totally hate Light. Not after the anime ending. When reading the manga ending- I'd been grinning and somewhat enjoying reading as Light got pwned by karma. But the anime version... afjkdlsajfldkas *cries* THE MUSIC, AND THE PART WHERE HIS YOUNGER SELF WALKS PAST HIM, AND HIM BEING ON THE STAIRS AND SEEING L... ;_;

- So, yeah... the ending of the 37th episode had me crying... a lot... pretty much for the next few minutes after it ended if I thought anymore about the ending, the characters, justice, and whatever else...

Pure curiosity- What'd you think of Near and Mello and Mikami?

Having L there. OH MY GOD. I was SO HAPPY to see that. The creators of the story knew just what they were doing, didn't they.

Near-Smart. Smug. Interesting but not nearly as likeable as L, because L, though he knew Light was Kira, nevertheless could not help but become Light's friend. Near never let himself do that.

Mello-God, I loved him. Loved how utterly flaming he was, how he held a grudge, his chocolate obsession (I'm sure there must be Mello/Remus Lupin fic out there somewhere), how he nevertheless couldn't keep from helping the cause against Kira. His death hurt. A lot.

Mikami-I liked him better initially, because his character never really grew/changed, so after a while I was no longer as intrigued by him as I was at first. Though I did love his unswerving devotion!

I think you'll really like the way the movies end. And 13 How To Read of the manga has a lot of breakdown of what happened and when, and background information on the characters.

I'm totally hoping you get into writing DN fic. Especially Light/Mikami *puppy eyes*

Mm, speaking of Aja, I'm fairly sure she wrote the amazing essay I linked you to. And now that you have finished the series I can categorically tell you how much I love Near (answer: with all my little heart.)

I keep thinking of things I want to ask/tell you while I'm off doing things like grocery shopping and then finding I've forgotten them when I actually get to the computer. I promise I'll be pestering you for more theories from your delicious brain.

Near is a very cool character--he's careful not to form any kind of relationship with Light, so he comes off as cold and efficient when it comes to solving the Kira mystery. Which puts him in the best position to win!

Got it. http://moonythestrals.livejournal.com/36754.html. Some of the shorter ones deserve to be iconed, and the rest should be animated and shown one after another as a short film. ("..." says Light. �Do I want to know what kind of relationship you have with Kira?� L shrugs. �Probably not.�) I particularly love the Misa one, because it makes her awesome. (Misa looks at all the tired, begging faces around her, and sighs. �All I have to do is pretend I desperately want to go out with Yagami-kun, right?�)

Silver Pard's 'Redivivus' and river-moonlight's 'Death Note: Crossroads' have both made me love Sayu, and the latter has planted the idea of Sayu/Matsuda in my head. (Why should the geniuses get all the love?) Of course, moonythestrals' Blooper Reel also made me love the idea of Matsuda/Misa. (What can I say? GreyLiliy's 'Death Eraser' has made me positively adore Matsuda.)

All of those authors (except moonythestrals) are from the Pit, so if you wish for a good DN genfic they're fairly easy to find using the fanfiction.net/~authornamewithoutallnon-alpha-numericcharacters form.

The first DN fanfic I ever read was an achingly beautiful Rem/Misa UST short story. Rem's still probably my favorite character.

When you get to the dub, I look forward to your thoughts on how they subtitled the second opening. : D

i, sadly, am not AT ALL looking forward to the live-actions. i've seen clips. omg, the bad. oh, the bad.

but to be fair, i don't like light at all either. i cried for mello, i cried for ryuk, OH GOD i cried and cried for L, but i was just like OH IT IS ABOUT *TIME* when light finally bought it. that brain was lost.

No argument that Light had to eventually get what was coming to him, but, OH, the joy of watching a clever and gutsy young soul go from "Someone has to take on this burden" all the way to "MUAHAHA" before the first episode ends! I was hooked from that instant.

I have great fondness for those kinds of characters. It's as if I think to myself, "Yeah, you think you wouldn't do that if you were placed in the same situation, but, oh, no one's as noble as they like to think they are, are they. Heh heh heh."

I still can't bear to watch Light going insane, poor thing. The glimpses I've had of the confrontation in the warehouse are clips from AMVs, and they've still left me crying (there was one where they took the bit where Light's just been shot and added an echo effect that just killed me- the bit where he's calling for Misa, or Takada, or anyone at all and asking what he should do now he's lost). I watched his death scene though. That was beautifully done.
