PSA: Why you may not be able to see content under the new settings.

So, if you notice a lot of posts on your flist that say, "You are about to view content that may only be appropriate for adults," no, these are not test posts from your flisters, trying out the new adult content settings. Because if you go to look at their ljs, ALL their posts are now under a cut stating this same thing. They've changed the settings on their ljs to indicate there is adult content in their ljs, and the reason YOU can't see anything is because you haven't registered your birthday with lj. (Like me, until 10 minutes ago.) Make that change, and, assuming you are not a minor, the content will be revealed again.

I was confused as all hell earlier this evening when my friend posted a perfectly harmless meme but it was behind the adult content lj-cut. At which point I realized I'd never actually bothered to put in the year on my profile.

Which kind of defeats the purpose of this whole system, but for them having taken four months to work on it, it doesn't seem incredibly well thought out. :/

Not that I'm aware of! This is a significant doing of LJ's, it would appear--giving one the ability to flag one's LJ as generally containing adult content. Love it or hate it, I guess it's a big deal. Whatever.

I think you have to do more than that; I've always had my birthdate registered with LJ (and have always been over 18) but I had to change some settings here (http://www.livejournal.com/manage/settings/). At the bottom, I selected "Do not collapse" and "Do not filter my results."
