I have watched the first two episodes of the first season of Supernatural. It is a good show. I do not love it. Am just not into, well, the supernatural horror genre.

And neither brother pushes my buttons. Which is, again, not their fault. The show did close episode two with a Rush song, though, yay.

I too find Supernatural good and yet not terribly interesting. I too do not care for supernatural horror as a genre. And while I think Jensen Ackles is too pretty to be allowed (and I would love to see him play the Dame in a panto), I can't really get worked up about it when I'm just not sucked into the stories.

The thing that's compelling about Supernatural - other than the pretty boys - is the relationship between the brothers, and it does take awhile for that to really come to the forefront, for it to really become obvious just how much they care about each other. It's totally not the individual stories that you see each week that pull you in, unless you're really in to that sort of show.

Date: 2007-10-10 09:33 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] amanuensis1.livejournal.com
I liken it to Numb3rs--I love those characters and the relationship between the brothers is fascinating, but I got what they were about right away from episode one; I didn't have to wait to see their relationship develop. More importantly I loved the plots of Numb3rs, the mathematics that suddenly leaps forefront to bring both of their careers together. I think I get the relationship in Supernatural and I like it but the rest has to be got around, rather than sucking me in, and that keeps me away.

Worth a shot though, eh? I started watching from Season Two, then went back to watch Season One, and I think some people would like the show better if they started later. It develops, and the brother-ness is my crack there. And Dean's soul-engulfing prettiness. ;-)

This is so true of some shows. I remember Babylon 5, where the two-hour pilot was decent but not as good as the episodes which followed.

Ah, phew. I don't think I could handle it if you went over, too.

I just now finished watching epsidode 8 and, no, still not hooked. I even think the some who plays Sam is quite dishy, but the stories and writing are just really dull and unimaginative and the characters are cyphers. I've seen every one of those concepts and storylines before.

I honestly don't get the Supernatural thing. It's watchable, I guess, but not inspirational, as in, I need to see more, I need to read and write fic about these boys. I'm going to see at least the first season through just because I want to be fandom culturally literate, but I'm also going to stare at my favourite writers who give up HP for Supernatural with confused and wounded eyes, lol.

I couldn't get into the idea of Supernatural, even. Never mind having to find time to actually watch the show!

Mind you, I watched the first two episodes of Heroes back in the summer, then went on holiday and didn't see any others, and hadn't really been hooked by those - but friends kept raving about it, so when the BBC did a 'catch-up' weekend a few weeks back, I braved it, and now I'm mildly hooked. Not enough to go searching out fanfic, but enough to watch it every Wednesday evening! And probably not enough to mind much if I miss an episode...

Yeah, I had the same reaction. I wanted to love it, and I only made it through one episode, and the horror was too much for me, and the rest of it didn't balance out the horror. With SGA, I didn't love the show but I adore the fandom, but I couldn't even do that with Supernatural.

Aw, now I feel left out because I LOVE supernatural, at least the first two seasons. I am withholding judgment so far on season three to see what they do with the Mary Sue they just introduced :Pouts: I don't LOVE horror but I do enjoy it because it doesn't frighten me, and the relationship between the boys makes up the rest. I don't enjoy horror movies, because they are too cliche. But they can afford to be because once your target has shelled out the money to sit in the theater, rent or buy the DVD, you don't need to keep them there. (horror movies are rarely Oscar material after all) On the other hand a TV series needs to get creative and develop the characters so that their audience will come back again. And except for a few episodes that were so-so to me, Supernatural has followed that and created enjoyable characters that have great chemistry and plots with enough creativity and twisty-ness to keep me entertained.
Just on the basis of the uniqueness of the show, I would have given it a good shot. I mean I don't know of many other shows that are based entirely around two main characters, or three if you count the impala. :)

*mopes about* Supernatural pretty much saved my poor fangirly ass as I was getting over the Harry Potter ending (still not done with it btw, cannot even make myself read old H/D at the moment, it's that bad D:).

I have to say that personally I had a lot of problems in the beginning as well. The first season is very good, but not terribly fandom-attractive. The second season is absolutely cracked, and terribly attractive in all sorts of ways, and even then I did not see the Wincest (Dean/Sam). It took me one crackfic and I was completely, totally sucked in.

Oh yeah, and one humungous plus about the SPN fandom? The RPS makes for some pretty superb hot prettyboy sex. >:D

and shhh but I didn't really get into SGA either, despite [livejournal.com profile] siriaeve making watch the entire first season and then read fics. :O ;)

My girlfriend (admittedly before she was my girlfriend) made me watch all of s1 of SPN during the hiatus, and it really didn't grab me until more than halfway through. I hadn't watched it up 'til then because it is exactly my kind of show (I was the kid with the flashlight and book of ghost stories under the covers) and I figured they'd do it wrong. And I don't always find it convincing. It's very clunky in some ways, but the more I saw, the more the clunkiness became part of the charm. I spend a lot of time wanting to punch one or both Winchesters, but then I feel the same way towards Harry, and that doesn't stop me. (Also, I second the above comment as to how the RPS is way full of pretty.)

All that being said, however, I'm really glad you won't be devoting energy to SPN fandom. HP needs you! I need you in HP! *returns to lurking*
