Am at Walt Disney World this week, and I saw the Finding Nemo musical show at Animal Kingdom yesterday. It was charming. I'm unforgiving on musicals; if the songs aren't good I don't give points for the enthusiasm of the actors or the sets. And the songs were good! I heard the first two lines of rhyme and was worried, but everything improved after that. Sweet, catchy, great puppetry, beautifully staged, and a well-compressed storyline--not bad for 35 minutes of show. The "Fish Are Friends, Not Food" number is arguably the best. I especially liked the giant puppet they made of Mr. Ray, which is mounted on top of a tricycle-like arrangement and the puppeteer's got up like the Wizard of Oz underneath.

They even salvaged something that I would have sworn wouldn't have worked--Dory's dreadful "Just Keep Swimming" ditty is turned into an actual musical number. The humor of that ditty in the film is that it's a stupid, tuneless piece of crap, so I would have said you'd screw up that humor by making it into a real song. But it works, and not only does it work, it's reprised by Marlin as he hovers over the consciousness-losing Dory after she's been stung by the jellyfish. It was pure Marius and Eponine, I'm not making that up.

Only beef? They castrated Gill, man. Or whatever it is you do to male fish. Gill has one song and it's all "we can do it if we act together," which, blah, is nothing like Gill. Gill's a cynical loner ready to risk others for his own agenda--or sacrifice himself for theirs. I had to go read my own fishslash fic to take that taste away. Gill/Nemo OTP, man.

(And, yes, a week at WDW always leaves me with the urge to write Disneyfic.)

Ooooh, have fun! I'm coming up with the family on Thursday - will you still be there or no?

And yes, the Finding Nemo show is lovely - I've been playing the soundtrack for a few months and I have so much adoration for In The Big Blue World. Have you gone over to the Nemo pavillion at Epcot yet? They use the songs there, too, in the "ride" component, and iirc in the Crush show, too.

Have you made it onto Expedition Everest yet?

I'll be gone in just a couple of days, pooh! :( And yes, I've been on Expedition Everest once, last visit. It was...endurable, but intense! My favorite is Big Thunder Mountain, because I love the coasters that go really fast but don't have any plummets.

WDW! I've heard great things about that show. I'm not a show kind of girl, but I might hit that one if its still running when I get back there sometime in this lifetime.

This year I'm going to Disneyland Anaheim for the first time. Or rather, I'm going to LA and I can't go that far without hitting Disneyland. Of course the best time for me to hit the park is the worst time to be there (over New Years weekend). But I'm looking forward to the compare/contrast.

I have never been to Disneyland! But I go to WDW at least a couple of times a year. I'm a Disney nut!

Disneyland second is so funny - you'll feel like you're visiting your old house after new people have moved in and gotten new furniture. :D

Makes sure you do the Matterhorn. It's so much fun especially if you wind up in a sled with a fat man in the back. Also make sure to check out the 50th Anniversary exhibit on Main Street if it's still there. :)

It's not the classic Disney characters that make me want to write so much as it is the movie characters, plus delicious dark rides like Pirates of the Caribbean and the Haunted Mansion. ^_^

I've seen a bunch of Disneyfic in Finnish - mainly sadistic femmeslash - but none in English. So, you certainly should write some!

I can't remember Gill. Then again, I don't remember much about it...

Ah, Disney World! I'm sure my one and only trip there would have been a bit better had it not been for the date. True story: Some people talk about how they were at school or at work or at home when they heard. On September 11, I was at Animal Kingdom. Very few things are more terrifying to a thirteen-year-old than having it explained to them why we were evacuating if the planes hit an entirely different part of the country.

Anyway, question!

I'm going to have a four-year-old step-brother soon who loves the movie. Will reading your fic cause me to giggle uncontrollably whenever I see him watching the movie?

I'd ask if it'd mentally scar me, but

a) You're a good author, so chances of that are low
b) Nothing has mentally scarred me since the Totoro Smut. *shudders*

I think it would make you see the slash even more strongly, though I swear that film wrote its own slash. It might inspire "awww"s more than giggles, and I don't think it would scar you! ^_^ It's here, if you want to give it a go. (http://www.amanuensis1.com/aninterlude.html)

I was on your website a while ago, and I noticed the other fics section, and when you had Disney fics, I was like, "Ohmygod fish slash ahh!" *covers eyes*. But for some reason I was compelled to read it and like, whoa, whenever I show that movie to the little kids at work now, I have to skip past that scene with them in the tank. :P lmao.
Man, for fish slash, though, you pulled it off quite nicely. I actually want to see some more Disney slash, much to the chagrin of neurotic parents and film advisory boards everywhere. XD
Glad you had a good time.

Zomg yay! I am so jealous, I live in Canada and we have no Disney anything. :( Otherwise I'd be there everyday.

Yay that Marlin reprised Dory's song while she was unconcious!
If they ever make a sequel they must get married!

That is an amazing line. The delivery on it was perfect. Dory and Marlin's relationship was fascinating--not founded on romance or attraction, but on trust and need. I love that it didn't have to be romantic (but, yes, you could totally read it that way)!

Am also at WDW this week! Will have to check out the Nemo show. Finally made it onto the Rockin' Roller Coaster today; it's been closed for the past month for refurbishing. Loved the new Pirates of the Caribbean ride; it's the same, only better, what with the addition of the animatronic Jack Sparrows (in three different scenes). It's amazing how much like the animatronic Johnny actually looks and acts like Johnny as Jack; they've really got his mannerisms down.
Enjoy the rest of your time at WDW!

I hear the Rock 'n' Roller Coaster has a single rider line now! *is eager*

And as much as I love the audioanimatronic Captain Jacks that have been added to Pirates, I'm sad they got rid of the two bound-and-gagged fellows in the last scene. I had all sorts of fantasies about them. ^_^

I have seen it! It's...it's neat but it's a little too kiddie-themed for me to go again and again, unlike a number of shows I will happily see again and again. It's hard to define what makes it under my "not too immature" radar!

Ahahaha! The first time I saw Nemo I was slashing Nemo/Gill within the first 5 minutes of Gill's introduction. (you're so right, that slash really did write itself.) And then I thought my brain had been screwed up from spending too much time in fandom. :-) I'm so glad I'm not the only one!

Disney rec: Monsters' Inc Laugh Floor. It's brand new, over in Tomorrowland at MK where the Timekeeper used to be and it's surprisingly a lot of fun. (Same technology as Turtle Talk with Crush.) May be a bit repetitive more than once, but the first time's it's an absolute scream.
