Damn, this has been a pain.

For those of you who thought you'd have heard more from me in the past two weeks-plus, I've had a glitch with my new laptop which has been kinda consuming. But now I've put the thing through all the tests that tech support can have me do (the final backup, erase and install, and software restore that took me NINE HOURS today was just oodles of fun, right) and have reached the "send it in for repair" stage, which is something of a relief. Out of my hands and on to theirs, and I can sit here with my penultimate computer and go back to playing. So I will try to catch up on missed emails and the like soon!

How new is the computer? I'd make them take it back if it were within 30-60 days of getting it. What kind is it?

[identity profile] amanuensis1.livejournal.com 2006-02-28 11:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, it's brand-new. It was malfunctioning out of the box, but you know how it is--they make you jump through a zillion software-testing hoops (including the sort that take a nine-hour day to test, grr) before they'll have you send it back for repair. It's an Apple iBook.

[identity profile] meri-oddities.livejournal.com 2006-02-28 11:09 pm (UTC)(link)
I'd make them give me a new one, really. I've heard that Apple had pretty good service, but you know if it doesn't work right out of the box...

Do you have one of their stores near you? It kind of helps to present it in person, with other people around. :-)

[identity profile] amanuensis1.livejournal.com 2006-02-28 11:18 pm (UTC)(link)
I could, I suppose, but I'm willing to give them at least one go at repairing it. I've had experience with trying to get Apple to take back a computer that was malfunctioning right out of the box and it's like buying a car--they don't take it back unless they can demonstrate it's a hardware problem and can't be fixed. I'm just not up for that fight yet.

Just sending a little icon lurve your way. :-)

[identity profile] amanuensis1.livejournal.com 2006-03-01 02:03 am (UTC)(link)
Aiiiee! Omigod, that icon is PERFECT!! Yes yes yes yes!

[identity profile] phantomminuet.livejournal.com 2006-03-01 02:14 am (UTC)(link)
Thanks. I made it my own self. :-)

[identity profile] herbmcsidhe.livejournal.com 2006-02-28 11:37 pm (UTC)(link)
It sounds more like it was an iLemon than an iBook...

If it still doesn't work, definately make them give you a new one. Or threaten to switch to a Dell.

[identity profile] amanuensis1.livejournal.com 2006-02-28 11:43 pm (UTC)(link)
It happens! Can happen with any make computer. The thing I fear is that we'll get in a "We couldn't recreate the problem, so we replaced a bunch of stuff"/"I got it back and the problem is persisting"/"Okay, send it back again" cycle. Because I've had experience with hardware manufacturers that will do that until they exhaust you into living with the problem, the bastards.

[identity profile] herbmcsidhe.livejournal.com 2006-03-01 12:05 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I know it happens with any of them. We had 3 Toshiba laptops and they all experienced cascading problems; the were in the shop more than we had them, which is why we did finally switch to Dells.

(and that icon is scary!)

Arghhh! Nothing's worse than getting a brand new shiny and not having it work like it's supposed to. :( Here's hoping your connections are soon as smooth as Harry's first time at assplay. ;)

(had to fit in porn in there somewhere!)

Damned laptop separating our amanuensis from fandomy lurve!! *shakes fist* but it's working now and pretty and that's the good part. *HEE*

[identity profile] amanuensis1.livejournal.com 2006-03-02 01:29 am (UTC)(link)
Well, it's not actually working, but I'm no longer fussing with it--I'm using my previous laptop (which was working just fine, just doesn't have the latest versions of software) and am going to send the wonky one back to THEM to fuss with, bah!

[identity profile] loony-moony.livejournal.com 2006-03-01 03:57 am (UTC)(link)
Just when I'm back in fandom again. Damn! *MISSES YOU LIKE THE PORN MISSES THE LUBE*

[identity profile] noagirl.livejournal.com 2006-03-01 04:24 pm (UTC)(link)
I hate it when tht happens - thank Merlin for public computers or I wouldn't be on the web myself. -.-
*feels your pain and sends hugs*

[identity profile] amanuensis1.livejournal.com 2006-03-02 01:30 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, it'd be so nice if I could just rely on public computers! Really, that'd be terrific. "This one's not working. NEXT!"

[identity profile] noagirl.livejournal.com 2006-03-02 04:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Or "Someone on this one, guess I'll just have to take the one next to it. *heavy sigh*"

[identity profile] ariadneelda.livejournal.com 2006-03-01 06:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Argh, I can totally feel you, there's nothing more frustrating than that! I hope your problems will end soon! *hugs*

[identity profile] amanuensis1.livejournal.com 2006-03-02 01:30 am (UTC)(link)
Thank you! Yeah, I hope they can get it taken care of first try.
