Spoilers for the pilot episode below the cut.

For those of you who said I'd love Firefly?

You were right. Oh! I just watched the pilot this weekend--how can I not love a story where the main character won't shoot an unarmed man, will shoot one who's armed and threatening another without a second thought because there isn't time to argue, won't stand to hear religious claptrap at his table (it's his table, dammit), has a Josselin/Phedre relationship goin' on, and isn't offended that some of his crew would sell him out if the price were high enough?

Actually the show sold itself to me as soon as the salvage-team-in-space blew a ship's hatch with explosives...and it was soundless. And the ships don't go WHOOSH! Migod, I think that's the first television or film since 2001 I've seen to do that. I was open-mouthed with joy.

And that's the best "yes we really killed off this beloved character no wait ha ha we didn't" I can remember. Those usually piss me off and I was laughing like a loon over this one. Whedon, I'm pwned.

Now I'm torn between watching all of these as quickly as I can so that I can see Serenity right away versus parceling them out nice and slow.

It's impossible to parcel them out. You might decide that that's what you're gonna do, but I predict that you'll have watched them all at least once by this time next week, at the latest... :-P

What I want most right now is to watch the pilot AGAIN. Ooh, it was so cool!

Watch The Train Job. It was the replacement pilot, and the scene with the burly guy in front of the engine....you'll know it when you see it...that's what sold me on the show.

*blinks* Okay, if you say so! Is it the second episode on the DVDs or what? It sounds familiar and I've only looked closely at the first DVD's case.

[identity profile] heinous_bitca.livejournal.com 2005-09-19 06:39 pm (UTC)(link)
It should be the next one after the pilot, so just keep on going. *glee*

Oh, absolutely! The Train Job was my dead-set hook as well.

"Right! Best thing for everybody! You betcha!"

I'd be willing to bet money that I can guess which episode will be your Very Favorite, though. (Heart of Gold. Let me know if I'm right!)

I shall try to go into that one with no expectations so that I am not disappointed. ^_^

You think so? But what about Objects in Space?

(is, of course, totally owned by that.)

[identity profile] semperintheatro.livejournal.com 2005-09-21 10:32 am (UTC)(link)
Objects In Space completely blew my mind. When it was over I just sat there staring at the dark screen, completely enraptured.

Listen to it with the audio comentary, it's an amazing ride. Joss Whedon defines classy.

I second that remark. They're like peanuts/popcorn/m&ms/goodie of choice. It's real hard to watch just one.

Just enjoy 'em -- then you can go back with commentary tracks and sense of history and look for the nuance.

Oh, btw, don't bother with the comic book miniseries that came out allegedly to bridge the gap between TV series and movie. Pretty cover art, but the story is so not worth it.

BTW, any favrit characters yet?

[identity profile] amanuensis1.livejournal.com 2005-09-19 08:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Shoot, I can hardly remember their names yet--but rather than look them up I'll just be an endearing newbie (I hope) and describe them: I do love the captain, and the pilot makes me squee. Toy dinosaurs! I really like Gina Torres as an actress, have for a few shows, but I need to see more of her character to decide if she's a favorite. And I love the doctor! As soon as I saw him I said, "Okay, he's too pretty not to be a recurring character." The Ambassador's fascinating. And I was so glad they didn't kill off--whassername--Ceighlen? Caighley? Whatever--oh! I love her. I was gonna be sad if she'd died.

I should bookmark this to come back to! But I'll get 'em all eventually. ^_^ Thank you so much; this is service above and beyond!

I'm looking forward to your continued reactions. I hope you post more as you watch future episodes. [I'm particularly fond of the Doctor. Too pretty, indeed.]

Couple links for you.
  • To enhance your viewing pleasure, The Firefly Chinese Pinyinary provides translations for all the spoken and written Chinese used in the series.
  • AFTER you finish watching the DVD, here's Dead or Alive -- a draft of an unfilmed episode.
  • And, though it's no Harry Potter, there is fanfic (including slash) out there. I'm kinda fond of "Big Damn Zombies, Sir", though again, save it until after you've seen more episodes.

By the way, Joss made things real convenient for slashers by giving every character a different first initial. Nothing like the profusion of PPs in the Potterverse.

Oh, this is excellent, thank you so much! Am checking out the Chinese site right now.
