Spoilers for the pilot episode below the cut.

For those of you who said I'd love Firefly?

You were right. Oh! I just watched the pilot this weekend--how can I not love a story where the main character won't shoot an unarmed man, will shoot one who's armed and threatening another without a second thought because there isn't time to argue, won't stand to hear religious claptrap at his table (it's his table, dammit), has a Josselin/Phedre relationship goin' on, and isn't offended that some of his crew would sell him out if the price were high enough?

Actually the show sold itself to me as soon as the salvage-team-in-space blew a ship's hatch with explosives...and it was soundless. And the ships don't go WHOOSH! Migod, I think that's the first television or film since 2001 I've seen to do that. I was open-mouthed with joy.

And that's the best "yes we really killed off this beloved character no wait ha ha we didn't" I can remember. Those usually piss me off and I was laughing like a loon over this one. Whedon, I'm pwned.

Now I'm torn between watching all of these as quickly as I can so that I can see Serenity right away versus parceling them out nice and slow.

[identity profile] revena.livejournal.com 2005-09-19 06:25 pm (UTC)(link)
It's impossible to parcel them out. You might decide that that's what you're gonna do, but I predict that you'll have watched them all at least once by this time next week, at the latest... :-P

[identity profile] amanuensis1.livejournal.com 2005-09-19 06:28 pm (UTC)(link)
What I want most right now is to watch the pilot AGAIN. Ooh, it was so cool!

Watch them all as fast as possible, then watch 'em again after you've seen Serenity. Or before. Or three times . . .

Dude. Watch 'em all and then watch 'em again. And watch the outtakes on "Our Mrs. Reynolds" for confirmation of Joss's shipping preferences. *snerk*

And then curse Fox for cancelling it, but love on Paramount for greenlighting the movie.

I find it utterly impossible to have a favorite episode, because they all have moments.

River is my favorite character, but oh man, the things Jayne says...

Sit yourself down and have a gorram marathon. You won't be sorry.

[identity profile] amanuensis1.livejournal.com 2005-09-19 07:43 pm (UTC)(link)
And now I know where you guys are getting "gorram" from! I thought it was just someone's compromised Brit-esque spelling of goddamn--which it IS--but now I know its origins! And I will use it all the time.

Oh, I'm glad you liked it! Firefly is one of my favoritest things ever. It's so shiny! Reasons to watch them fast: Train Job, Ariel, and Objects is Space. Reasons to slow it down: There's still only thirteen. ^^

[identity profile] amanuensis1.livejournal.com 2005-09-19 08:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, the cruelty of decisions!

[identity profile] jjluver.livejournal.com 2005-09-19 07:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Firefly is quite possibly the best thing ever. I don't think you'll be able to watch them nice and slow. Just quickly and over and over again. I've had my dvds since they were releaed and have subsequently worn them out. There isn't one character on the show that isn't completely fascinating in some way.

[identity profile] amanuensis1.livejournal.com 2005-09-19 08:06 pm (UTC)(link)
I know! As soon as the cute young suspicious-looking doctor showed up I said, "Okay, he's too pretty not to be a recurring character."

[identity profile] catherinecookmn.livejournal.com 2005-09-19 07:03 pm (UTC)(link)
What -- you mean somebody recognizes that No Air = No Sound? Wonderful!

Oh god I KNOW.

[identity profile] lorax.livejournal.com 2005-09-19 07:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Whee! Another convert! Firefly is like crack. Every single person I've shown them to is now the saddest sort of addict just waiting for their Serenity fix.

Watch 'em! You know you want to! ;)

[identity profile] amanuensis1.livejournal.com 2005-09-19 08:07 pm (UTC)(link)

::dances with joy::

Yey!Yey!

I think you should watch them all in a row, with breaks ONLY BETWEEN episodes to do inconsequential, non-Firefly related things like going to the bathroom and feeding your poor, beleaguered human body...

Wait, that's what I did...

[identity profile] amanuensis1.livejournal.com 2005-09-19 08:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Poor human body indeed! Ah, well, it's only a body, who cares. XD

(Can't thank you enough.)

[identity profile] http://users.livejournal.com/_outercourse/ 2005-09-19 07:25 pm (UTC)(link)
And the slash is great. Simon is just too easy. In one episode, Mal says he has "pretty hands", "lily-white skin" and is "pasty all over".

I know. Too easy.

(If you're wondering how he knows that Simon is pasty all over, just leave it up to your imagination. :D

[identity profile] amanuensis1.livejournal.com 2005-09-20 12:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, especially as Zoe complains of never being able to have a real bath...

[identity profile] melonaise.livejournal.com 2005-09-19 07:42 pm (UTC)(link)
I think my favorite episode is "Out of Gas"-- after showing friends the pilot, I'll usually skip ahead to that one, because it has a lot of history in it. Plus, engine sex.

[identity profile] amanuensis1.livejournal.com 2005-09-20 12:50 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't know where it falls but I'll get to it in order. I'm like that. ^_^

[identity profile] cluegirl.livejournal.com 2005-09-19 07:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Now me, I'm just panting after Zoe, is all. She'd break me, and I swear I'd die grinnin!

Though there's a lot to be said for Captian Tightpants too...

I really need a .wav of That Line of Zoe's from "War Stories". But I've been drooling over Gina Torres ever since she played Nebula (hey! Talk Like A Pirate Day tie-in!) on Hercules...

Zoe and Wash really do have the best TV marriage I can think of.

You're doomed. I've seen every episode at least eight times, and I still end up watching Shindig (disc two) instead of working on my research papers or doing laundry or other necessary things.

On the bright side, my cat will watch Firefly with me.

[identity profile] amanuensis1.livejournal.com 2005-09-20 12:53 pm (UTC)(link)
LAUNDRY?? Necessary? I ask you.

And you have a smart cat.

Make sure....

[identity profile] ixchelmala.livejournal.com 2005-09-19 08:23 pm (UTC)(link)
you watch them in their INTENDED order, not the broadcast order, as Fox fuckred things up. Also, if you can, watch the again with the commentaries.... Oh yeah, Joss is my master now:D

Welcome aboard miss! now watch yer step and don't let Jayne get to frisky with ya;)

So far I've only seen The Train Job and bits and pieces of others, but I am completely sold. On Mal/Jayne, actually. What I love most: Whedon's imaginative play with the future in which characters curse in Chinese, and in which idioms have drifted, so that it's like listening to Welsh sometimes -- you're going, oh, I get that -- wait, what? Sly? Huh? And the re-arrangement of sexual mores -- prostitutes are honored high-class citiczens! Hee! It's like, some bizarre Canada, where everyboody mroe or less speaks the language, but the culture is upended. So much love for this show. And I'm a sucker for ex-soldiers of a Lost Cause, so yum, Mal.

I hope the upcoming movie means there will be more episodes. Some of the characters annoy me -- Simon and River I could take or leave, and that preacher fellow. But Kaylee and Mal and Jayne and Zoe and Wash. . . yumness. So glad you like these too! I spent a night recently trawling for good Mal/Jayne, but alas.

[identity profile] dien.livejournal.com 2005-09-20 01:16 am (UTC)(link)
You may change your mind on Book (the preacher) after 'Safe' (maybe) and almost definitely on 'War Stories.' Plus, River is seriously amazing. *repeats* War Stories.

OMG Firefly! I am so thrilled! I started watching when Scifi started airing it, but I'm itching for the DVD's because hell, I want to see the whole series before I see Serenity. I think my favorite character right now has got to be Jayne, but I also really love Simon, and River is so cool and nutso, and Kaylee is great too! Basically, I love them all. They're all well rounded and they have motivations for the things they do! It's not just "because" I mean, wow how rare it that? And Reavers are fookin scary! I want to see Reavers fic. And as lame as it is I want to see people being rescued from Reavers and then having to deal with it! Mwahaha. I'm sick. I'm sooo sick.

[identity profile] amanuensis1.livejournal.com 2005-09-20 01:41 pm (UTC)(link)
You're not sick, you're just one of the many who looove our hurt/comfort. Whee!

Yea Yea Yea!

[identity profile] rectpropagation.livejournal.com 2005-09-20 03:14 am (UTC)(link)
That series is so awesome! Someone at Fox needs to be stabbed repeatedly for cancelling it. They gave you just enough episodes to realize that the preacher was hiding something big without getting clue one about what it actually was.

You'll love them all but the ending of "Heart of Gold" was just awesome.

One of my favorite scenes (I believe it was in the pilot) is where the shepard goes to Inara because he's worried he shouldn't be on Serenity after everything that's happened and there's this shot of him sitting with his head down and her standing with one of her hands on his head, comforting him.

Re: Yea Yea Yea!

[identity profile] amanuensis1.livejournal.com 2005-09-20 01:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Eep, I'm typing this carefully not looking at the meat of your comment because if there's anything spoilery in there I wanna be surprised. But yay for the enthusiasm!

[identity profile] http://users.livejournal.com/_riz/ 2005-09-20 04:34 pm (UTC)(link)
LOL, Firefly will soon rule the WORLD. Excuse me — the 'VERSE.

and it was soundless

YES. Although Serenity had some space sounds. :| But I saw the screenings, and it wasn't "done," so there's still hope.

[identity profile] amanuensis1.livejournal.com 2005-09-20 04:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, but the use of the mood music in place of the shouldn't-be-there sound effects! That's effing brilliant. That needs to continue.
