A Legilimens solves those problems nicely. Even the nature of the owl-feather story, when I think about it, wouldn't be known to Lucius. He'd have to do serious research, and that's a neat solution. This is after all a major undertaking, and presumably he's doing it essentially for his own benefit rather than his master's.

I agree with you that while Voldemort tried to kill Harry in the Ministry foyer out of automatic anger and desire to cripple the opposition, until he knows Harry's place in the scheme of things (not just suspects) he'll probably, in his right mind, hold off. And if Lucius's little plot can neutralise Harry altogether – all to the good. Let's hope that rationale will keep Harry safe rather than sooner dead, whatever Lucius intends!

I love the sweet picture at the end, of Harry tucked close into Lucius's embrace. Let's hope it doesn't turn Voldemort's stomach.
