Torchwood Children of Earth Ep 4 (Spoilers)

I want this actress to get whatever the English equivalent of an Emmy is. Jeebus, that was fantastic.

...oh, you thought I was going to talk about that other thing? Well, why not.

1.) It doesn't make sense for them to have killed off so many members of the team and then to kill off more. Unless the series is ending completely.

BUT

2.) It doesn't make sense to give a character a long emotional death scene like that and then go "FAKE" one episode later.

So, yeah, there are little hints Ianto might not stay dead ("He will die," says the 4-5-6, as if there might be a while before everyone's actually dead. It's alien poison, who knows) (and Gwen's "There's nothing we can do," is just ripe for contradiction) but I'm trying to deal with the likelihood he's toast. If that's so, then I'd prefer the series end. Most of us aren't watching Torchwood in a "I only like the Jack And Gwen Show, all the other characters can go f**k themselves" way, so they'll piss off more viewers than they'll entertain if they've killed off this much of the regular cast.

She was fantastic. All the acting's been very good actually, on the whole. I just unfortunately absolutely lost my last bit of care when Ianto died. I ... actually kind of actively hate Jack a bit and I don't think I like Gwen and Rhys enough to go any furthur with this. (especially since they'll probably die soon if there is a season 4!) And if they bring him back, I may actually be more annoyed because mostly, in DW and Torchwood we have discovered that bringing people back to life is very bad indeed. So suddenly making it okay just cause it's Ianto ... wouldn't really work for me. I'm really sad that he's dead but I'd like him to stay dead now he is. If that all makes sense ...

[identity profile] amanuensis1.livejournal.com 2009-07-10 11:00 am (UTC)(link)
It makes complete sense. We don't want characters to die but we don't want poorly executed bring-back cheats.

[identity profile] lycoris.livejournal.com 2009-07-10 10:43 pm (UTC)(link)
I really hate back cheats. If you're going to kill someone, it should matter. I have seen a couple of good ones (Sherlock Holmes I felt worked but then I always knew it happened so maybe it doens't count. Buffy was usually quite good at this actually, when it did it) but quite often, it's just annoying and cheap and makes you feel that you wasted a huge amount of emotional energy. I prefer dead to mean dead, on the whole.

[identity profile] sorion.livejournal.com 2009-07-10 11:02 am (UTC)(link)
I agree. But I still don't want to watch the show without him. He's too much part of it.
So, even if they continue, I wouldn't care and just stick to fics or something.

[identity profile] lycoris.livejournal.com 2009-07-10 10:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, I completely agree. I've watched it tonight and then I'm giving up on Torchwood. I've never really enjoyed it anyway and I'm tired of the high body count! (and I don't like bleakness very much either. Not unremittingly) Torchwood and I were never good bedfellows really.

[identity profile] sorion.livejournal.com 2009-07-10 10:46 am (UTC)(link)
I agree on that actress comment. She gave me the shivers :( Brilliantly done.

And I definitely wouldn't watch the show without Ianto... And because I felt like crap, I wrote a ficlet XD
http://sorion.livejournal.com/371933.html
(It's a feel good ficlet. So no worries ;-P)

[identity profile] amanuensis1.livejournal.com 2009-07-10 11:00 am (UTC)(link)
I LOVE YOUR ICON SO MUCH IT MAKE TAKE ME A FEW MINUTES TO CLICK TO YOUR FIC. AWWWWWWW.

[identity profile] sorion.livejournal.com 2009-07-10 11:03 am (UTC)(link)
LOL Thanks XD

You don't have to read it, if you're not in the mood. I just really had to write something ^-^'''

Yes! Fantastic scene. Gave me chills.

You make very good points about the other thing. I've heard the show will continue (though I don't know if it's rumour or fact) but it really doesn't make much sense when more than half of the original team are dead. So... I don't know. I'm just "let's wait and see." And I think I'm staying away from LJ/IJ/DW from the moment tonight's episode airs till I see it myself because last night I got accidentally spoiled about Ianto despite being careful to avoid spoilers. :/

[identity profile] amanuensis1.livejournal.com 2009-07-10 11:03 am (UTC)(link)
I knew something big was coming and thought, "If it's death, if they kill anyone, it'll be Ianto. He's had the red light of dooooom on him from the beginning of this miniseries because of the deepening of his and Jack's relationship." So I worried it might happen, but it wasn't the same as being spoiled.

And, hell, I was upset when they killed SUZIE. When I started watching the series I was all, "Omigod, I LOVE Indira Varma, I'm so thrilled she's in this!"

[identity profile] dementedsiren.livejournal.com 2009-07-10 02:41 pm (UTC)(link)
He's had the red light of dooooom on him from the beginning of this miniseries because of the deepening of his and Jack's relationship.

*sigh* Yeah, because God forbid there's an enduring same-sex relationship on television that a) isn't fetishized, b) ends in tears, or c) all of the above.

Sorry for comment hijacking...it just hits a bit of a nerve for me :-/

[identity profile] amanuensis1.livejournal.com 2009-07-10 06:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Is that hitting a nerve for you? Aw, I'm sorry. I didn't even think of it that way. I guess Torchwood has put bisexuality in such a favorable light that I'm not even thinking of it as "they killed a same-sex relationship," just, "they killed a relationship that I loved." But I believe I understand.

[identity profile] dementedsiren.livejournal.com 2009-07-10 09:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh no, I didn't mean it in the "you were hitting a nerve" way - just in a "the show is hitting a nerve" way. In case you took it that way, which I did not intend (silly internet and it's inability to convey nuance).

It's just near the top of my thoughts at the moment b/c I was talking to friends the other day and we were trying to think of examples of "normal" (or as close to normal as you get in TV/movies) gay relationships, and couldn't come up with one. It is a bit discouraging.

[identity profile] amanuensis1.livejournal.com 2009-07-12 01:07 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, no, I didn't think you were saying it in a "you" way, 's okay! ^_^

I'm still waiting for the gay James Bond series. You know?

[identity profile] slumber.livejournal.com 2009-07-10 11:50 am (UTC)(link)
Ahahaha, I really must have missed something here-- all this while I'd been thinking the fifth WAS the last season of Torchwood (idk, some announcement last year or something that I vaguely remember? But I could be mixing this up with another series involving boy-kissing that happened many years ago), but my flist has been acting as though there's a chance for a 6th.

I think it was much better watching that happen to Ianto with the notion (however incorrect it may turn out to be) that nothing more would happen beyond tonight's episode. Because otherwise, you know, I'm not watching the Jack and Gwen Show. (Even if Gwen has been more than amusing so far.)

PS. That woman is amazing, whoever she is. ♥

Proof of my confusion

[identity profile] slumber.livejournal.com 2009-07-10 11:52 am (UTC)(link)
I meant third season-- I had five [episodes] stuck in my head as a number. :| Sorry.

[identity profile] amanuensis1.livejournal.com 2009-07-10 06:50 pm (UTC)(link)
The annoying thing is I probably would still tune in for the Jack And Gwen Show at least to see if they could win me back. But it would take quite a bit.

[identity profile] lyricalnights.livejournal.com 2009-07-10 12:30 pm (UTC)(link)
All I'm saying is, if Rose appears to bring Ianto back from the dead or something, I'm quitting this show and throwing a shoe.

[identity profile] amanuensis1.livejournal.com 2009-07-10 06:51 pm (UTC)(link)
*watches in fear for flying shoes*

[identity profile] lyricalnights.livejournal.com 2009-07-11 03:13 am (UTC)(link)
...as the sneakers go sailing by...

[identity profile] amanuensis1.livejournal.com 2009-07-12 01:08 am (UTC)(link)
Yiiii. *ducks*

[identity profile] garillama.livejournal.com 2009-07-10 10:28 pm (UTC)(link)
No, they'll bring in Rose and 10.5 to replace Tosh and Owen... oh, and Lois will bring them all coffee, but it just won't be as good as Ianto used to make :'(

(And just saying, if they really do that, I quit the fandom.)

[identity profile] lyricalnights.livejournal.com 2009-07-11 03:11 am (UTC)(link)
In that case, I would quit the fandom, throw a shoe, and try to drown myself in the sink.

[identity profile] cesario.livejournal.com 2009-07-10 02:13 pm (UTC)(link)
She was in Sherlock Holmes as the older sister who died in "The Speckled Band" and later as the one who stole her younger sister's husband "The Cardboard Box".

[identity profile] amanuensis1.livejournal.com 2009-07-10 06:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Didn't see, but, damn, she's awesome.

[identity profile] lycoris.livejournal.com 2009-07-10 10:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh wow, that was her! I didn't recognise that as her, that's really kind of awesome!

[identity profile] rexluscus.livejournal.com 2009-07-10 03:08 pm (UTC)(link)
As much as part of me is saying what Jack said, which is, "fuck it, I take back everything bad I said about cheap cop-outs, just hit the reset button and bring him back!!!" it seems pretty obvious they ain't gonna. If it were Doctor Who, then yes, but the whole point of this series was that things like this could happen. And yeah, as soon as I saw the publicity shots that were all shippy and stuff, I was like, "well, Ianto's dead, then."

Bastards. :(

[identity profile] amanuensis1.livejournal.com 2009-07-10 06:55 pm (UTC)(link)
as soon as I saw the publicity shots that were all shippy and stuff, I was like, "well, Ianto's dead, then."

IT SUCKS HOW TRUE THAT IS. (That's why I'm laughing so hard.)

[identity profile] rexluscus.livejournal.com 2009-07-10 07:04 pm (UTC)(link)
And it took all my willpower not to burst into people's squeeful conversations about how great it was that they'd finally be developing the Jack/Ianto relationship and say "you do realize this means he's doomed, right?"

[identity profile] faynia.livejournal.com 2009-07-10 09:12 pm (UTC)(link)
That lady broke my brain last night and slowly got me to see the logic of her thinking. Emmy, yes!

[identity profile] amanuensis1.livejournal.com 2009-07-12 01:04 am (UTC)(link)
Wasn't she wonderful? I was getting more and more terrified with every second.

[identity profile] garillama.livejournal.com 2009-07-10 10:33 pm (UTC)(link)
I just finished the episode, so I'm way too busy BAAAAWing over here... but yes, she was amazing.

A part of me hopes they'll find a really clever, not hokey way to bring Ianto back... but the realist in me knows that either he's dead as a doornail or they'll Discover Ianto Had A Secret Twin And The Aliens Transplanted Their Memories So The Twin Remembers Everything Ianto Knew... or something equally ridiculous.

... *sniffle*

Also, got to say, I have to stop reading icon posts while I'm in the middle of a cliffhanger. I saw one that said "Spoilers below the cut. No squeeing here :(" and immediately started speculating. My guesses were: Ianto dies, Rhys dies, or Gwen loses the baby. I wasn't too surprised as the episode progressed.

[identity profile] amanuensis1.livejournal.com 2009-07-12 01:05 am (UTC)(link)
Your icon is so good it makes up for all the heartbreak of this miniseries. :D
