Ok, I gotta admit, the fact that one of the characters being a girl makes you want to see the movie less, kinda freaks me out. I know, I know, slashers and the boys, but I think Hollywood pretends that women don't exist enough anyways, without us helping them out.
I disagree entirely with the commenter who described Oskar, the protagonist, as selfish, however. He's not at all - he's a lonely, bullied little boy who has a dark desire for revenge against those who have hurt him.
But it is a lot like the basic premise of Twilight, except a fuckload better - and it was written a year or two before Twilight, which makes it feel even more like a victory.
