Tonight in the drabble chatroom, the theme was Gen night--no pairings--and I...was lost. When I drabble, it seems that I'm used to having the concept of a pairing as a fourth element of the story, along with characters, challenge, and theme. So, nuthin' hit.
So I decided to work on my Candy Is Dandy challenge for
scribbulus_ink instead...and ended up writing Gen. Gah! ^_^ (Pre-slash. Think of it as pre-slash!)
My challenge was--she SWEARS this was random-- Remus & a Honeydukes' Best Chocolate Bar. Isn't that just TOO?
No cut-tag; it's G-rated and under 250 words.
First Night In Gryffindor
Remus decides to sit at the end of the table, despite the friendliness of the faces welcoming him. The hat had said they'd be his friends, but he does not know if this is a good thing, yet.
His mother has warned him that he can never get too close to anyone. "Being close means you want to tell them all your secrets. Yes, especially the most hidden ones. You can't have that, darling."
His robes are grasped from behind. "No, sit here, mate! Who're you, then? I'm Sirius, this is James. That's Peter, we've just learned."
"R-Remus."
"Name like that, you've got to be from a wizard family."
"Half."
"Then we've got to be friends. They put me in Gryffindor, I might as well piss off my family good and proper. Here, have some of my chocolate. Bought too much on the train."
Later that night, as Remus lies in his new velvet-curtained bed, murmuring ever-more bold responses to the jokes of Sirius and James and Peter--despite the repeated scoldings of a wall painting that they should all be asleep--he remembers the chocolate, and decides he wants some right then. Honeydukes' Best, the label reads. He takes a bite.
The taste fills his mouth like warmth on a winter night. All thoughts of Cadbury Dairy Milk are driven from his head forever.
And when Sirius calls, "G'night, Remus," and James and Peter echo, "G'night, Remus," he bursts into tears, but softly.
