I had an epiphany, or a gethsemane or a candlemas or whatever you call that near-religious experience of enlightenment, this morning.

The reason I don't write more Harry/Snape is because I see more potential for Harry/Snape either when it's funny or when it's dark 'n' evil.

Not that I don't enjoy reading angsty Snarry; If You Are Prepared and A Life More Ordinary and Crucius had me doing the "I love I love I love!" thing, and there are probably a dozen more that I could name.

But reading angsty Snarry always makes my brain do the same thing; it goes, "Well, that seems all that is needed to be said about that, I suppose." I think this is because at the heart of all serious Snarry is the but-I'm-your-professor-you're-my-student conflict, and I just can't seem to come up with any inspiration to tell that one for the umpteenth time.

Snape is such a great character. I love to get into his head and write; when I do, the story just pours itself out of me, like I'm just the secretary taking dictation. (Note the pretentious lead-in to relaying anecdote about pseudonym; will find the strength to resist for now.) But I don't want to tell that same but-I'm-your-professor-you're-my-student story again, so, the way around that that inspires me best is when the story is humorous or evil. Humorous makes light of the issue, or can ignore it; evil takes us past that argument altogether.

And frequently I'm in the mood to write serious romance or angst. Which means, given that I'm almost always looking for someone to pair with Harry, it's time to break out one of the Malfoys or the puppies, in that case.

So. I feel good, having worked this out. 'Cuz I like Snarry but have been writing lots of angst and haven't been able to figure out why that pairing wasn't inspiring me for it.
