Torchwood 2.03, To the Last Man

Torchwood 2.03, To the Last Man; SPOILERS follow:

"To the Last Man" was a nice little episode without any big surprises; for science fiction that's potentially a negative, but the emotional side of it was satisfying. I've liked Tosh from the beginning and have been sorry she got only one real episode of development last season.

And? I may be shallow but the whole episode would have been worth it for that Jack/Ianto kiss, so far from casual it would have been a crime to term it gratuitous.

Oooh, yes, the Jack/Ianto kiss was hot.

But from a purely HP tangent, wasn't Anthony Lewis (Tommy in the ep) adorable? He and brother Matt look good...

Ah, he *is* Matt Lewis's brother, then? I did wonder, looking at him (and listening!).

Older brother, yes indeed!

I had no idea that was Matt's brother! The whole time I was watching, my brain kept shreiking "Neville! Neville!" whenever he came on screen. Now I know why :D

That was Matt Lewis's brother? I had no idea, and now that you say it it seems as if it should have been obvious! :D

You are absolutely right.

It's odd how I keep making excuses for Torchwood; Torchwood is not deep science fiction. And for all those who love Doctor Who but dislike Torchwood, I got news for ya: Doctor Who isn't deep science fiction either. Doctor Who deals more with the sort of social commentary SF is good for, but it's still not very hard sciencey.

Doctor Who science doesn't even attempt to be science fiction for real.

I'm struggling with Torchwood. We watched episode 1 of the new series, but even James Marsters couldn't drag us into the swing of it. TBH I feel let down by what they've done with the idea of Torchwood. I wanted it to be dark and edgy and loaded with UST, but they always seem to be too quick to get to the sex without there being any build-up of tension before the characters put out. I so wanted it to be the 'grown up' Dr Who, but I think the fact that they've edited a series of Torchwood for pre-watershed kind of sums up where they're actually taken it as opposed to where it should have gone.

It makes me sad to say this because I'm a huge supporter of home-grown sci-fi, but I'll be watching Reaper on digital while Torchwood is on BBC2.

:(

As I said to spiderine above, Doctor Who deals more with the sort of social commentary that science fiction is known for; Torchwood doesn't go that far. It's more a snogfest/character development story.

I HOPE WE GET MORE SNOGGING BETWEEN THEM IT IS HOT.

Hi hi... quick question for you...

Have you ever had any of your fics translated and posted in a Spanish "slash fanzine" called "Intruder Slashzine"? The person who runs it, "Heiko" told me that she'd translated and posted your work. I'm just trying to make sure that this is okay before I give her permission to translate my stuff.

Thanks!

[identity profile] amanuensis1.livejournal.com 2008-02-02 09:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, I have! I have not been able to access much of the site myself because of the language barrier, but Heiko is unfailingly sweet and I like her very much. ^_^

Thank you! I already told her that she could translate and post one (or more) of my stories. Thanks for the feedback.

I also have another BIG question to ask you:
Will you be attending Terminus? If so... I'm proposing two roundtable discussions, and while it will be an open format, I'd love for you to attend both of them if you can. Both of them will involve discussion of BDSM in fanfic, but from different discussion angles. One will talk about sadistic authors (and all the ways we love to torment our characters), and the other will talk about using fanfic for sexual exploration of things we don't necessarily do ourself (including straight people writing slash, and RL vanilla people writing BDSM). Would you be interested in providing your wisdom during roundtables like those?

[identity profile] amanuensis1.livejournal.com 2008-02-03 01:24 am (UTC)(link)
I plan to be at Terminus, and barring any schedule conflicts, I'd love to attend! I may not have as much wisdom as you think, though; my philosophies can probably be summed up in a sentence or two. XD
