The Quotation Meme

Tagged by [livejournal.com profile] ellen_fremedon, plus I saw it first on [livejournal.com profile] florahart's lj and yeah, I think it's cool.

Go here and look through random quotations until you find 5 that you think reflect who you are or what you believe.

(I cheated a little--added two extra, and subbed two quotes I didn't get from the site in order to avoid using two from the same person, and to use one I really wanted.)

When I get a little money I buy books, and if any is left I buy food and clothes. -Erasmus

Whoever does not love his work cannot hope that it will please others. -Unknown

A human being should be able to change a diaper, plan an invasion, butcher a hog, conn a ship, design a building, write a sonnet, balance accounts, build a wall, set a bone, comfort the dying, take orders, give orders, cooperate, act alone, solve equations, analyze a new problem, pitch manure, program a computer, cook a tasty meal, fight efficiently, die gallantly. Specialization is for insects. -Excerpt from the notebooks of Lazarus Long, from Robert Heinlein's "Time Enough for Love"

God used to be the best explanation we'd got, and we've now got vastly better ones. God is no longer an explanation of anything, but has instead become something that would itself need an insurmountable amount of explaining. -Douglas Adams

Most folks are about as happy as they make up their minds to be. -Abraham Lincoln

Reality continues to ruin my life. -Bill Watterson, Calvin and Hobbes

Everything you can imagine is real. -Pablo Picasso

And also consistent with my beliefs, I'm tagging...anyone who wants to do it. ^_^

I feel like this one could be a meme in itself! :D

"A human being should be able to change a diaper, plan an invasion, butcher a hog, conn a ship, design a building, write a sonnet, balance accounts, build a wall, set a bone, comfort the dying, take orders, give orders, cooperate, act alone, solve equations, analyze a new problem, pitch manure, program a computer, cook a tasty meal, fight efficiently, die gallantly. Bold what you have accomplished!

Oh, and...

"Life is a zoo in a jungle." - Peter De Vries

"No one has ever had an idea in a dress suit." - Sir Frederick G. Banting

"Everything passes. Everything changes. Just do what you think you should do." - Bob Dylan

"She did not talk to people as if they were strange hard shells she had to crack open to get inside. She talked as if she were already in the shell. In their very shell." - Marita Bonner

"We're not lost. We're locationally challenged." - John M. Ford

I love the De Vries one especially!

[identity profile] amanuensis1.livejournal.com 2006-08-13 11:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Hee, and one can never get the complete set. Not and post about it, leastaways. ^_^

[identity profile] lirren.livejournal.com 2006-08-13 06:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Ooooh, that was fun. I could have spent the entire afternoon reading quotes. And I sort of cheated. I used six instead of five. But still!

[identity profile] amanuensis1.livejournal.com 2006-08-13 11:23 pm (UTC)(link)
I did spend at least an hour going through them, reading! *goes to see yours*

[identity profile] noblerot.livejournal.com 2006-08-13 09:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Specialization is for insects.

Haha! Oh, Heinlein. I'd forgotten how really smart he can be.

And this...

Reality continues to ruin my life.

...should be tattooed on my chest.

[identity profile] amanuensis1.livejournal.com 2006-08-13 11:24 pm (UTC)(link)
I was going to use another Heinlein one, too, the one about religion being like dandruff, but I couldn't do two Heinlein's so I did the Adams one instead, figuring it substituted okay. ^_^

[identity profile] fabularasa.livejournal.com 2006-08-13 11:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Mr. Rasa says to bestow yet another kiss on you, because the Heinlein quotation is going to be a new website and syllabus header.

[identity profile] amanuensis1.livejournal.com 2006-08-14 12:02 am (UTC)(link)
I love that quote. And the shameful thing is, I look at it as a way I think I should function but I don't, really--I wish I spoke more languages and knew how to drive a stick shift and grow tulips and fix a leaky tap, y'know? (But I can make ice cream and connect video cables and read a subway map!)

[identity profile] amanuensis1.livejournal.com 2006-08-14 12:56 am (UTC)(link)
(And I've had that quote up in a teensy xerox on my bulletin board for years!)

[identity profile] so-severus.livejournal.com 2006-08-14 06:33 am (UTC)(link)
surprise! - you are my hp fanfic mentor :D just wanted to pop by and say hello. Let me know how you want to go about doing this thing.

speak to you soon,

jenn

Wonderful! What I would like to do is learn what your hopes/expectations for writing in the fandom are. I really would like to do some kind of discussion with you and the other mentees on m'list, see if that generates ideas, as a group...

You are CLEVERER than Erasmus, hee!

[identity profile] maddiec24.livejournal.com 2006-08-15 12:08 am (UTC)(link)
I'm off to do it now. I absolutely adore your first quote!

[identity profile] amanuensis1.livejournal.com 2006-08-15 04:40 pm (UTC)(link)
I think I first saw that one on an Amazon.com bookmark! Back when all they sold was books. :D

[identity profile] theglassonion.livejournal.com 2006-08-17 07:58 pm (UTC)(link)

[identity profile] amanuensis1.livejournal.com 2006-08-18 02:17 pm (UTC)(link)
[livejournal.com profile] heidi8 still has links to the pdfs of the Draco Trilogy, for the moment! (And I'll keep copies of them, too, for the future, though some of them are quite large and would probably have to be yousendit'ed or something.) Go here:

Those are great! I especially love the "jack of all trades" quote!

One guy I just love..I've seen his quotes around and he's so brilliant, is George Bernard Shaw. I need to get some books on him..

[identity profile] amanuensis1.livejournal.com 2006-08-18 09:29 pm (UTC)(link)
It's funny, because I've loved and believed the "jack of all trades" one since I first saw it years ago...but it's not really the way I live my life, though it's the way I'd like to. There's just, so much out there in the great wide world...but I don't want to die before I learn a good number of the basics, you know? I suppose it's like the guy who stays at home and works in an office and raises 2.4 children and owns 1.2 homes and has only been out on a sailboat once in his life, but still thinks he's a seaman at heart.

[identity profile] silverhielm.livejournal.com 2006-08-19 07:45 am (UTC)(link)
This meme is lovely *_* and I think that "reality continues ruining my life" is the best!
I'm going to make it too!

[identity profile] amanuensis1.livejournal.com 2006-08-19 07:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, goody! Do it!

[identity profile] justwolf.livejournal.com 2006-08-20 12:04 am (UTC)(link)
Just have to say, you chose some really great quotes.

[identity profile] amanuensis1.livejournal.com 2006-08-20 12:16 am (UTC)(link)
Aw, thank you! I thought they were fun ^_^

apropos of nothing...

I decided that offsite backup made more sense, so I'm doing the worldbuilding here. And you're invited, if you're inclined.
