I always hated it when they made the good guy let the bad guy go after the bad guy has promised to return and kill everbody.
"If you release me I will return and destroy everything you hold dear!"
"Okay Mr. Man, I love you, bye-bye!"
It's just stupid. I think Whedon approaches cliches in the show and then does something else instead just to be like, "Now see how stupid it would have been for the show to have had the cliche instead of that?"
