Know why I never post on fandomsecrets? I like sharing my shame.

From the trailer, I wanted rather badly to see this film:

...and then I learned the one on the right is not a boy. Now I'm no longer interested.

Migod, could I get any more shallow.

Eli, in the film, is played by a girl, but they dubbed the actress's voice over with a boy's to make her sound more ambiguous.

The character is definitely meant to be a castrated boy, which was a major plot in the original Swedish novel but is hinted at during the movie, but there's only so much they could get to in a film adaptation.

Androgynous, not ambiguous. Yikes.

Top of the Netflix list, Ma! :D

[identity profile] amanuensis1.livejournal.com 2009-05-03 01:15 am (UTC)(link)
Totally gonna see it now! Boy, just when you think life is not worth living. :D

[identity profile] persephone-blue.livejournal.com 2009-05-03 01:18 am (UTC)(link)
Post a mini-review afterward! I would love to read what you think!

I HAVE NO IDEA WHAT THAT IS. I ACTUALLY OWN THE ORIGINAL ON DVD. XD

They are avoiding spoilers, he appears as a girl (and is played by a girl). Eli tells Oskar "I'm not a girl" and you could take that as "I'm a vampire" but it definitely isn't and there's also a shot of Eli naked where you can see the scars. In the book we're told a lot more of Eli's backstory, and the old man's, and he was a boy. I bought the book because I liked the movie so much and wanted to see where it came from, and I don't even like vampires (ignore all the buffy icons, doesn't count). The book was good (in translation can make it hard to tell) so I enjoyed it despite it not being my genre. But the movie transcended that, it is brilliant and YOU MUST SEE IT!

Some of the summaries refer to "vampire child" and it may have gone right over some reviewers heads - it's pretty subtle in the movie, and they cut some of the flashbacks (for better story adaptation reasons) that would have made it more explicit.

Yay! Sorry for my belated comments, should have read the whole thread.

[identity profile] amanuensis1.livejournal.com 2009-05-03 01:35 am (UTC)(link)
No, I'm very glad for your comments! This is one case where having the spoilers is a good thing for me!

*deepbreathes* Okay, getting off capslock to try to make some sense: are you a Mystery Science Theatre 3000 fan at all? Because I'm a HUGE one and ICW is a tribute group operating on the same principle--one of the very best ones out there IMHO. Follow that link and you can buy their mstied version of Lady Frankenstein! And Bloody Pit of Horror! (Their first, Bride of the Gorilla, is not available right at the moment because they're reprinting it in a new edition.) Comedy GOLD.

Yeah, you need to know it hints the right kinks. It needs fandom style warnings on it.

Homg, hell yes, I love MST3K! When I clicked the URL the INTENSE graphics and yellow font blinded me and I didn't bother trying to make sense of what the HELL it actually was (bringing back some caps). I'll definitely look into ICW now, cheers.

I was indifferent to this movie until I read this and all the comments. MUST. RENT.

[identity profile] saturn92103.livejournal.com 2009-05-03 02:06 am (UTC)(link)
It's a fantastic film!

[identity profile] persephone-blue.livejournal.com 2009-05-03 02:08 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, it is very good. Combines horror with emotional nuances exquisitely.

Wow, I didn't see that one coming.

*fails gender identification 101*

[identity profile] golden-bastet.livejournal.com 2009-05-03 02:48 am (UTC)(link)
This is an *excellent* film. You. Must. See. It.

(Interestingly enough I see parallels between this and Coraline... in a Big Picture sort of way.)

[identity profile] waxbean.livejournal.com 2009-05-03 02:55 am (UTC)(link)
hahahah -- took me a moment to get it. I was wondering why you wouldn't want to see underage lesbian hotness on film...

[identity profile] tekalynn.livejournal.com 2009-05-03 03:11 am (UTC)(link)
Title, please? Thanks.

[identity profile] blamebrampton.livejournal.com 2009-05-03 03:57 am (UTC)(link)
Let the Right One In. FANTASTIC book, and, I am told, a great movie, too.

[identity profile] pumpkin-pantry.livejournal.com 2009-05-03 04:06 am (UTC)(link)
*de-lurks* lmao I honestly didn't know the whole 'twist' until I read the comments in your lj, and for some reason it makes the movie much less creepy. At first, I wanted to see the movie cuz I thought it was two girls and was disappointed when I watched it...but now this makes me want to watch it again! Oscar is the cutest thing ever, you should watch it just to see him swim/trying to be manly.

[identity profile] golden-bastet.livejournal.com 2009-05-03 04:34 am (UTC)(link)
And I forgot - there *is* a bona fide gay couple in there, but it's waaay subtle.
