Putting a positive spin on it.

I have decided that, if the film of GoF is uncanonically portraying Durmstrang and Beauxbatons as old-fashioned in their lack of co-educational status, this means that the homoerotica in both schools is rampant--and that Hogwarts is by comparison a hotbed of progressiveness and so there's even less homophobia there than we slashers pretend, in our giddy fandom brains.

So meh.

Ooh, you're fueling my fantasies.

[identity profile] amanuensis1.livejournal.com 2005-09-16 11:10 pm (UTC)(link)
That's fine. I'll just stick to my store of girls' school fantasies.

[identity profile] amanuensis1.livejournal.com 2005-09-16 11:12 pm (UTC)(link)
I know there are too many things that will be changed for me to get up in arms about 'em. So I'll just hope that lots of slashfic gets inspired by this film.

Hell, I'm betting Alfonso wrote some. Who do you think is his lj username, huh? ^_^

I don't recall Durmstang girls being specified, but it does not state that all are boys; that's something that I think would have been, had it been so. After all, the students are described in the same way that the Beauxbatons students are, and an occasional male Beauxbatons student is mentioned.

[identity profile] amanuensis1.livejournal.com 2005-09-16 11:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Could have been worse--instead of "unibrow" females they could all have been Slavic "mail-order bride" stereotypes. Eeesh.

[identity profile] amanuensis1.livejournal.com 2005-09-16 11:22 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't think you're wrong about Durmstrang but you think there'd have been some note of it. Harry observes just that they're students, in the same way the Beauxbatons representation are students, and only makes note of the genders when there's a Beauxbatons male he comments upon. I imagine he'd have made note if Durmstrang had brought only male students.

I'd think their hats were more fabulous if they themselves didn't clearly think, "Our hats are FABULOUS!"

[identity profile] amanuensis1.livejournal.com 2005-09-16 11:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Ooh, that's a warming thought.

[identity profile] amanuensis1.livejournal.com 2005-09-16 11:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Argh. If I'm ever found in a hat like that, get me help. I beg.

[identity profile] amanuensis1.livejournal.com 2005-09-16 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)
I wanted to see Durmstrang girls and Beauxbatons boys! Of course, I also wanted to see Harry nekkid, spied on by Myrtle, and I'm guessing I'm not going to get that either.

All occasions call for Monty Python quotes. Nudge nudge.

[identity profile] amanuensis1.livejournal.com 2005-09-16 11:32 pm (UTC)(link)
That's freaking fabulous. I have to remember that strategy. (the "official disapproval" one, not the condom-on-banana one.)

[identity profile] amanuensis1.livejournal.com 2005-09-16 11:33 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm afraid of the answer, but, why'd you get in trouble? Did you ask why it wasn't pierced, or something?

[identity profile] amanuensis1.livejournal.com 2005-09-16 11:34 pm (UTC)(link)
It's all about the visual!

[identity profile] amanuensis1.livejournal.com 2005-09-16 11:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Ooh, you're good! I agreed that I thought Harry would have made an observation if it had been all boys but I hadn't been able to find a specific quote. Thank you!

[identity profile] amanuensis1.livejournal.com 2005-09-16 11:45 pm (UTC)(link)
At least it fuels my fantasies!

I asked why they didn't show all of the internal parts of it, since they showed all of the internal parts of the penis & male genitalia. The teacher said "What internal parts?" and I said something like "The 90% of the clitoris that is in the body", or something similar. The teacher then got infuriated and sent me out of the class, with detention for "talking back". Which is codewords for "the teacher is a dumb bitch who doesn't know jack shit and therefore shouldn't be teaching this". And the diagram was totally wrong.

[identity profile] amanuensis1.livejournal.com 2005-09-16 11:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, man, I get those codewords, I do. *giggles*

Well, I think that's inevitable, really, but it's always fun if they can add serious fuel to the fire. :)

And bless you for using that icon. Bless you. :)

That was like, the best part of the book, too. Darn screenwriters.

*grins* I saw you and said, "I know which icon I should use."

Single gender schooling at Durmstrang and Beauxbatons

[identity profile] justinetre.livejournal.com 2005-09-17 12:19 pm (UTC)(link)
It was wierd that, and the more I think about it, the more it feels unnatural, like the director is playing to stereotypes just to make the film more accessible to a younger audience.
But on the other hand, those cute capes and hats on the Beauxbatons beauties are very nice...lol

"Younger audience." Yes, that could be; I think I feel like Rowling at times, who doesn't write AT a younger audience--she just writes a young character and doesn't ask herself who the audience is. Or so I understand, from her interviews.
